I've actually listened to the new Sonic Youth, and... I'm not sure how much I like it.
It's too quiet for me, maybe. Or maybe I haven't listened to it enough. It felt so mild-mannered I started wishing for a good, overlong guitar noodle like the ones that used to hamstring their mid-to-late '90s albums.
Can't call it yet, though, because I haven't listened to it very much.

Interesting. The only thing i've heard is "unmade bed" which is the first single, i guess. it sounded pretty good, though i'd definitely have to agree, it is a quieter, older sonic youth these days. What did you think of murray street? I'm with you on the mid 90s SY too. Washing machine was actually the first record of theirs i got (found a used copy at the pawn shop for $2), so i've always been fond of it.

That's interesting to hear. I think I can dig it though ... Sonic Youth was one of the first 'cool' bands I liked (thanks to Sassy magazine - cheers Jane Pratt) and I feel like I've kind of grown up with them, and although I still love their older albums, I'm getting old too, so the mellowing effect suits me.
I'm definitely looking forward to it, but approaching with a sense of caution, as I do all records by bands that have been around as long as SY.
It's too early to get into orders, but my list so far includes Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose", The Icarus Line's "Penance Soiree", Les Savy Fav's "Inches", Mission of Burma's "Off On Off", Sufjan Stevens' "Seven Swans", The Von Bondies' "Pawn Shoppe Heart" and Paul Kelly's "Ways & Means". Modest Mouse's "Good Music..." is getting higher and even though I've only had Mclusky's "The Difference Between me and you..." for one day, it should make the top what?, nine so far. If you haven't heard Mclusky before and love kick-ass music, you need to, but I think "Mclusky Do Dallas" tops the new one by a few hairs.

also, I gotta give respect to the new Slipknot album, I never used to be able to listen to this band more than a couple of songs into each album, but this one I have listened to from front to back a couple of times and will probably do so a few more times before returning it to my girlfriend's little brother. Not gonna call it a favorite album, but will at least give it a shout out!

Mark F - Do me a favor and check out my post in the Alternative forum regarding the Icarus Line. I've been wondering what the big deal is and I would really appreciate a fan to explain it to me. Thanks
EDIT: I just saw the Drowned in Sound review. Man, that album has one amazing cover. I'm going to go listen to it again now just for that.
Best wishes, ~V

Vykromond, you sound like a cool "dude." Check out my review at the Metacritic user ratings under The Icarus Line's post. But since you asked, I'll spit out some extra ideas I sent to my best music bud who won't be coming down until next month. First off, the lyrics are completely clear to me; that doesn't mean they're great-- they're just obsessed with the concerns of rock and roll: let me get some more and please leave me alone, big brother, so I can get some more. The thing that excites me, since I don't know what "Tomorow Never Comes" is, is that they combine awesome hooks with what seems like overbearing nonsense. Now, I'm an old fart, so I've been through Hendrix, The Doors, Pere Ubu, Nirvana and a gazillion other "overbearing bands", and as far as I'm concerned, these guys, at least on this living, breathing release, seem up to the standard-bearers. I do have more ideas, but maybe we should leave those for your forum.

The Candy Butchers - Hang On Mike (criminally overlooked, but then isn't all power pop today?) Nellie McKay - Get Away From Me (I really expected to get tired of this album quickly, but I'm not) Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand (along with the rest of the planet, it seems) Amulance Ltd - LP (kinds shoegazing, whoda thunk I'd like it?) Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose (I've pontificated at length elsewhere on my love for it) Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead (only because I just disovered Ted Leo and it's his latest)
I'm spending a lot of time with, but am not yet ready to commit to...
Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News Los Lobos - The Ride Patti Smith - Trampin'
My saddest trend for 2004 is the continued absence of any jazz from my list of faves. I'm just not hearing anything that I like. Take The Bad Plus, for example. Everybody raved about them last year, but they just leave me cold. Maybe it's just me.

Most definitely not just you; I can't stand the Bad Plus. The closest thing to good jazz we've had so far this year is Junk Magic, which I highly recommend.
