These are by no means the worst or 2007, but I guess I just expected a bit more from them. My biggest disappointments are as follows:
Angels of Light -
We Are Him This album didn't nearly go where I was hoping it would, but all I've heard by them was their split with
Akron/Family. From what I've heard, they're the same band, so I guess
Love Is Simple, their other release, clicked with me more.
Bjork -
Volta I really got into Bjork this year, picking up all of her previous albums. I absolutely love her music, and was really excited for this release. Because of that, I liked it more than a lot of people did. Just not enough to avoid disappointment.
Calla -
Strength In Numbers I love their first three albums, specifically
Scavengers. I thought their last one,
Collisions, was a bit of a miss-step, but not bad.
Strength In Numbers continues to go off the track they started on, making it a huge disappointment for me.
The Dirty Projectors -
Rise Above I just never "got" this one, though I gave it a lot of listens.
Miracle Fortress -
Five Roses I see that
Five Roses has been getting a lot of love on Metacritic. This surprises me. I don't know if there is just something I don't get or what, but I can think of about a hundred albums in 2007 I would rather listen to than this one.
Pela -
Anytown Graffiti See above.
Rilo Kiley -
Under The Blacklight It's not as bad as some critics have suggested, but the tame music that backs its risque lyrics is a huge turnoff.
Stars -
In Our Bedroom After The War Nothing on here seems to strike a chord with me at all, though I was looking forward to hearing it all year.
White Williams -
Smoke This just seems classically overrated. Its stripped-down aesthetic does
Smoke more harm than good here.
Notice
Some Loud Thunder by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is not on this list. That one took some time, but I grew to like it despite its flaws. I'm hoping that the same thing will eventually happen with these releases, but I haven't reached that point yet.
Who knows, I originally hated
Cryptograms,
Person Pitch,
Scribble Mural Comic Journal, and
A Place To Bury Strangers. Those all ended up placing favorably on my list, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for similar results.
