Well, here's some bands that I think could produce a classic: Wrens Elbow Built to Spill Liars Hard Fi Band of Horses British Sea Power Super Furry Animals Iron & Wine Doves I think Blur is doing a reunion album as well. Maybe due out this year.
Don't want to dash your hopes on some of these, hudson, but while Iron & Wine, Liars, and Super Furry Animals are all solid they are not in the realm of the masterpiece.

That sucks! You've heard them, i'm assuming. How did you get copies?

I can't wait for the new Iron and Wine, though. That new single is great.
I agree with you about The National's Boxer, although "Guest Room" is one of my favorite songs on the album. I also have to say that I'm thoroughly enjoying Interpol's Our Love to Admire (I'm a huge fan), and I don't understand some of the harsh reviews it has been given. "Pioneer to the Falls" and "Pace Is the Trick" are absolutely perfect in my opinion. And "No I in Threesome," "Mammoth," "Rest My Chemistry," and "Wrecking Ball" are all great songs. The Arcade Fire's Neon Bible is an amazing album too. Although not quite on par with its predecessor, Funeral, I still enjoy listening to it from beginning to end. And to anyone who is doubting the potential greatness of the next Radiohead album: Have any of you heard the new material they've been performing live?? It's friggin' amazing... songs like "Arpeggi," "15 Step," and "Down Is the New Up" are all excellent, and that's coming from someone who's only heard them in YouTube audio quality. Their new album is scheduled to release sometime in early 2008.

I got all three from Rapidshare or Mediafire type hosting sites, usually off of music blogs. I should go back at lesat, though, to say that Liars is actually quite good. It's probably an 8.5 or so, so I don't want to turn you off of it, because it is worth a number of listens. I found the other two to be fairly unmemorable, though.

I don't know, SFA is extremely catchy and memorable to me... but Liars is still an amazing album and I find all Iron & Wine to not be memorable. And I'm tired of people asking where someone got an advance album... their are really only three possible answers. 1. Promo sent to you by the band 2. Promo dl'ed torrent-style 3. Promo dl'ed from rapidshit or some such site

You're right. It's way too high.
Which is surely what you must be.
Nope. Just honest. I can't imagine Wilco aging any worse with this album. The Pitchfork review was right on the money. "Dad-rock" indeed. If you think it's a masterpiece, then I'm glad for you. But, it ain't. And, like the thread began, I'm still really waiting for one this year...

There's really nothing adventurous about Wilco's new album, but I will say that it's got a few fun tracks. It's just not that memorable...

How do you judge a classic/masterpiece? What qualities in an album cause you to conclude that you will never tire of an album.. and if you do tire of it, return to it years later and it still sounds fresh?

Those questions definitely get to the heart of this thread. I think that a masterpiece would be defined as an album that perfectly encapsulates the artistic vision of the band. I would have to know what they were getting at and feel that they had met or exceeded that goal. Also, I would define it as existing in its own perfect universe. To me, after a few listens, it would have to sound like not a single note was out of place, even in the most surprising, exciting, challenging, dissonant music. Kind of like at the end of a movie when the credits roll and you know that it couldn't have ended any other way. I also don't think that a masterpiece necessarily has to "sound fresh" later on. If it is perfect in its place in time, I would still rate it as a masterpiece. Maybe I'm too harsh on Sky Blue Sky, but I'm a Wilco fan and I had high expections for what they would do next after YHF and A Ghost is Born. Like someone else on another thread said -- it's ok for what it is, but I don't like what it is.

Seriously guys, one of the rules of the messageboards is to keep up with the threads. This is something that has been repeated over and over and over in many threads.. and it's annoying. I just wanted to get this out of the way... so stop being a whiney; use google, send someone a pm, just ask this stuff elsewhere. I'm someone who is always willing to help someone find an album. I make that very clear to everyone, it's just exhausting to see this question asked so often. quote: I think that a masterpiece would be defined as an album that perfectly encapsulates the artistic vision of the band. Your expectations seem reasonable to me; it sucks that you haven't found anything that meet them.

If I want to ask someone where they got something, I will. Got it? Now, unless you've got something at least half intelligent to say, why don't you run along and grace a new thread with your wisdom. twit.

Thanks for setting me straight big guy. You and jglass can go and form the metacritic "don't ask where you got your music from" police and make sure none of us members break the "don't ask" rule. Laughable.

This discussion is getting . . . nonconstructive. I agree that Hudson needs to chill out. I personally believe that if you want to get your point across, a reasonable post would work a lot better than an insulting one. For that matter, I also thought that Jglass needed to chill out when I read his original post. I don't see the harm in someone asking where someone got an advance copy of something. While there may be a limited number of responses, the responses will help someone find some new music. Isn't that the purpose of these boards? I also fail to see how anyone could get so annoyed by someone asking where someone got an advance release. There could possibly be other alternatives that no one has considered, such as "it's streaming at . . ." or "it's been released on . . . early". It merely requires those that are annoyed by such posts to disregard a sentence or two. OK, I've made my own inane contribution to this discussion. I will go back to making other inane comments that no one really wants to hear.

Getting back on topic . . . sort of. I was originally offended by p4k's "Dad rock" comment. Then I realized . . . I am a dad. The album was made for me. So, I'd call Sky Blue Sky a masterpiece, along with other "mature" albums like Challengers and Easy TigerI'm only kidding. I like those albums (at least, I like Sky Blue Sky, Easy Tiger, and what I've heard of Challengers), but they're not masterpieces. I would call Icky Thump a masterpiece, simply because it's my favorite White Stripes' album.
