It would seem that Radiohead is not releasing their new album this year. If I can think of a band capable of releasing a masterpiece, it's them. Lord knows they've taken long enough to put a dozen or so songs together.
I wouldn't hold you're breath on Radiohead putting out another classic...
The band members are all nearing forty, are rich beyond belief, and many of them now have families.
That, combined with the disappointing lack of freshness in Thom Yorke's Eraser last year makes me feel very confident in saying Radiohead's days as a musical front runner in Rock n' Roll are over...they may still put out some excellent albums over the next ten/fifteen years...and they had an amazing run, but the writing is on the wall...their best days are behind them.

Well, here's some bands that I think could produce a classic: Wrens Elbow Built to Spill Liars Hard Fi Band of Horses British Sea Power Super Furry Animals Iron & Wine Doves
I think Blur is doing a reunion album as well. Maybe due out this year.

I think it's too early to tell actually. I think we'll all be better able to determine Radiohead's future in music after their new album is released.
As far as Eraser, well, that was Yorke's deal. Radiohead would've never produced something like that, thank god.
Everything Radiohead has done up til now has been genius. I think they'll either release a wonderful album that each member knows is wonderful or they'll release nothing at all. At least that's what I hope for.
I'm a pretty big fan of Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity. Every song is absolutely jam packed with hooks, and the entire album is positively joyous, save for the last track, which functions as a big "fuck you!" to the audience, which is pretty much Deerhoof's style. A fun, fun record.
You could argue that the whole kitschy vocal thing is stupid, but I think it's pretty much the essence of 'hoof: lighthearted, fun, lively music that is undeniably alive and out for a good time.
Iono, I'm sure some of you would argue that a masterpiece has to be serious in tone. I disagree.
Spoon's newest is a couple songs short of a masterpiece.

A. Most years don't produce a classic... and if you were to pick a classic from each year, chances are people weren' too sure about it's staying-power then.
I still nominate of Montreal... and, I've been forgetting this band (somehow) all year: Battles. I think these two have made a huge impression on me.
Two of my top five have been huge growers that most others loved immediately!

As far as I heard, that album was essentially a Radiohead album. I heard the rest of the band ha a hell-of-a-lot of input on that album.
Welcome to the council Jglass, use the force wisely.
As for Thom Yorke's solo album, I was under the impression that except for the title-track, the rest of the band members didn't have any input on that album. I also know that the band whole-heartedly supported him and were all for him making a solo album. However, I am pretty sure that other than the piano chords on "The Eraser" the rest of the band didn't help with anything on Yorke's album.

Spoon's "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" IS the masterpiece of 2007. Not because it breaks any new ground or anything, but because it's just so killer!!!! I think too many music fans hope for records to break down new ground and, yeah, that's fine. But what ever happened to solid tuneage! Thank you, Spoon!
What's so funny? We don't all copy and paste our list from the Pitchfork 'Best New Music' section.
Wow, low blow..
RL if you read my previous posts in this thread you'll see what this "haha" mean. I wasnt laughing at you, really. The concidence of your first post made me smile a bit, that's all...and i don't read pitchfork. 5.2/10 for sky blue sky = moron's review.
The National's Boxer gets my vote. There's only one song that irks me really, and that's Guest Room (mainly for the lyrics)... but it's as close to masterpiece as anything I've heard yet this year.
I can't wait for the new Iron and Wine, though. That new single is great.

Never a truer word has been spoken, er, typed. The only review I have ever read that has been more ridiculous is the two star review of Blur's "Think Tank" on AMG. "A lousy album", apparently. One day we'll meet, Stephen Thomas Erlewine. One day...
