Some pretty good albums have been released this year. Of which I think Okkervil River's is the best followed closely by LCD soundsystem and The National's Boxer. But I still don't hear a masterpeice in any of this year's releases...so far.

Opinions? Thoughts? Which band yet to release their album is capable of producing a masterpeice?

But hudson, what are the albums that you consider as "masterpieces"?

Pitchfork says that the Radiohead album isn't coming until 2008. Not entirely surprising.

I think Liars or Band of Horses may be pretty good. From only hearing "Plaster Casts of Everything", I am greatly anticipating hearing what direction Liars have gone this time, and I saw Band of Horses live and I was very, very impressed with their new material.

I dont really know why but i tend to avoid bands with "horse" and "wolf" in the band name. It just get on my nerves so badly..............

While I think it's been a great year, I agree that there hasn't really been a masterpiece. Thee Stranded Horse has my top spot, and that could've been a masterpiece except that he butchered the second-to-last song, "Sharpened Suede," trying to make a different version of it than the incredible one on the 7" he put out last year.

There've been a lot of really really good albums this year (Sound of SIlver not being anywhere near the top of this list for me):

Battles- Mirrored
Blonde Redhead- 23
Liars- Liars
of Montreal- Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
Arctic Monkeys- Favorite Worst Nightmare (not groundbreaking but amazingly well-crafted music)
Animal Collective- Strawberry Jam

I think any of this could have gotten my top spot last year and it's still hard for me to put them in order this year.

my only indie rock masterpiece of this year (so far) is thee more shallows -- book of bad breaks. these guys bring so many styles to the table, incredible dynamics. I love the lo-fi feeling of the record.. feels as though it was recorded in my basement. songwriting is very strong as well.

My money is on Akron/Family: Love Is Simple. I thought their debut and split with Angels of Light were excellent... and while I was disappointed in Meek Warrior, the preview tracks I've heard from their latest are frantic, catchy and engaging.

Well, of course this is only my opinion but, as far as recent, modern masterpeices i'd say Sufjan 'illinoise', Knife 'silent shout', Okerrvil 'black sheep boy', White Stripes 'get behind me satan', and M.I.A. 'arular' My morning jacket 'z'. Just to name a few.

sorry Wilco fans....Sky Blue Sky is their masterpiece and best of 2007. Time will tell. I like the happier Tweedy.

LCD is a masterpiece within its genre. I mean, it doesn't transcend the dance/rock scene.
Of Montreal has come close.
Okkervil River has come closer...

I expected 2007 to be much more amazing than it is due to all the big names. The outcome was actually just a lot of mediocre albums - Interpol, The Shins, CYHSY, etc. LCD, Okkervil, Spoon, Modest Mouse came through, but...

Boys and Girls in America is still better than the best 2007 album. Someone better beat it, or I'll be pissed.

I don't see how you can say that this album is a masterpiece within it's genre.. there's so much more that surpass it! I mean, even LCDSS' s/t blew this out of the water..

Strawberry Jam murders anything I've heard so far this year, every song is great

Of all the albums you listed, to my ears, only Hissing Fauna can lay any claim to being better than Sound of Silver. People can call Murphy's approach simplistic, repeative, lyrically limited, whatever, what they are missing is that using very few tools, the man is an absolute master of tone...he completely nails the emotional feel of every track he puts out. There is absolutely no one out there in any genre right now with more pitch perfect control in this regard...NO ONE.

I do agree, Arctic Monkeys is suprisingly solid for a rush sophomore effort from a group of 20 year olds. They could have real staying power...surprisingly, it's the mellower tracks that consistently stand out.

I've heard it's a grower, but first two listens of The Stage Names for me have been tremendously disappointing...most of the album feels really clunky, not nearly as organic as BSB, and closer is just a gimmick, and just makes me ache for the Beach Boys Original...Okkervil picked a bad year to ape the Beach Boysin a year when at least three other bands (The Good The Bad and The Queen, Besnard Lakes, Panda Bear) have done much more interesting things with Beach Boy Styled harmonies.

People! Focus! This thread isn't about which band has released the best album. It's to discuss the fact that a masterpiece has yet to be released this year. And, the fact that we may very well end the year without hearing a true modern classic.

It would seem that Radiohead is not releasing their new album this year. If I can think of a band capable of releasing a masterpiece, it's them. Lord knows they've taken long enough to put a dozen or so songs together.

So, we'll just have to see which band comes out of nowhere with a bombshell of an album. It's kind of like Fantasy Football. Nobody really knows which player is gonna have a huge, breakout year, so it's anybody's guess.

At this point most of the albums coming out this year have at least been announced. I can't see something coming out of nowhere and shocking us with its greatness.
