Lately I've been curious if our results for top albums of the year would have been different if we'd used a different scoring method, so I entered different point values into the spreadsheet to come up with new lists:
2006's scoring method:
01. Radiohead - In Rainbows
02. The National - Boxer
03. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
04. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
05. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
06. LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
07. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
08. Okkervil River - The Stage Names
09. Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
10. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
11. M.I.A. - Kala
12. Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
13. Battles - Mirrored
14. The White Stripes - Icky Thump
15. The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
16. Menomena - Friend And Foe (Originally 17th)
17. Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog (Originally 16th)
18. Feist - The Reminder
19. The Field - From Here We Go Sublime
20. Blonde Redhead - 23 (Originally 21st)
The scoring method I wanted to use:
01. Radiohead - In Rainbows
02. The National - Boxer
03. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
04. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
05. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
06. LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
07. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
08. Okkervil River - The Stage Names
09. Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
10. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
11. M.I.A. - Kala
12. Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
13. The White Stripes - Icky Thump (Originally 14th)
14. Battles - Mirrored (Originally 13th)
15. The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
16. Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
17. Menomena - Friend And Foe
18. Feist - The Reminder
19. Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala (Originally 20th)
20. Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends (Originally 24th)
Changing methods didn't change the top 10 at all, and there were only limited differences in the bottom 10.
The implication here is that whenever we begin discussing scoring methods for next year, let's realize that different scoring methods have almost no effect on the final results.
