OK, well, I've heard the Andrew Bird, so yeah, I'll have to add that to my list. It's not quite as hummable or melodic as Mysterious Production, but it makes up for it by being more spectacular. That must be Dosh providing the drumming and some of the effects.

Well I've heard a bunch of stuff so I feel like I can comment:
1. Arcade Fire- Neon Bible 2. Menomena- Friend and foe 3. Shins Wincing the Night Away (waaay underrated here)
Good but probably forgotten at year's end: Of Montreal- If we were in a football stadium it would get the "overrated" chant Deerhoof- I made change my mind. It's growing on me. Kristen Hersh- Good cd that I recommend even if it isn't earth shattering
Already Done Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- Pre-ordered with excitement and got the MP3 download from Insound. Almost painful to listen to (especially the middle) although the last couple songs are good. Bloc Party- Wilco and Radiohead will have to really bomb to unseat this for disappointment of the year.
1. Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, Of Montreal 2. Friend Opportunity, Deerhoof 3. Friend or Foe, Menomena 4. Wincing The Night Away, The Shins (just added) 5. Some Loud Thunder, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (just added)
I've listened to some more albums and my list is growing. I very much like the new Shins, I was never really into them before, now that's changed. I know I've said that the new Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was awesome, but I only made that judgment from listening to 3 songs, I've now listened to the whole album and I have a feeling it wont say in my top 20, and if it does, it'll likely be number 20.

I really have to say, 2007 is starting off strong. I remember in early 2006 I was lamenting how weak the year was (though Islands and Jenny Lewis did grow on me, and Neko Case was an early release as well - and she was my #1). This time, though, I've got about 3 or 4 albums that will almost definitely take places in my top 20.

1. !!! : Myth Takes ( Just Added ) 2. Of Montreal : Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer ? 3. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah : Some Loud Thunder 4. Menomena : Friend And Foe ( +1 ) 5. The Shins : Wincing The Night Away ( -1 )
It is a little early, but I imagine there's a good mix of people on here who are obsessive about this stuff, and others who are more laid back and able to put it all together at the end of the year.
I probably fall more into the obsessive category, so as an effort to tone it down a bit, I try not to get too consumed with rankings too early. I am, however, considering doing a top 5 per month, which is maybe just as bad.

Clap Your Hands cover to their new album BITES!!! It's so awful.
Process of making the cover: -Attempt to draw the band members -Failed to do so, so they inked out the "ugly" parts -Dropped it in water -Said screw it, and went to bed

I can confidently say that Neon Bible will finish in my Top 3 at year's end. And if it doesn't, this year will be unbelievably good (if it isn't already).

I thought it was their attempt to make it look like Revolver. Any take on a classic cover like that could easily end up looking bad, though.

So far this year, I've listened to 19 January releases (although a couple of these were actually imports and being released in the US this month). 12 of these have already been deleted from my iPod, including a few that have been highly discussed here (Menomena, The Good The Bad & The Queen, Deerhoof, Kristin Hersh). Here are the 7 that have survived:
1. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? 2. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away 3. The Autumn Defense - The Autumn Defense 4. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder 5. Gruff Rhys - Candylion 6. Field Music - Tones of Town 7. Julie Doiron - Woke Myself Up
Up next for February: Bloc Party, Apples in Stereo, Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter, L. Pierre, Sondre Lerche, Malcolm Middleton, Times New Viking, Aqueduct, Bobby Conn...among others, of course

It's WAY too early to start these lists! But here I am. From DLing sound clips online only three January releases have really caught my interest - The Good, The Bad, and the Queen, The Shins, and Deerhoof. I haven't gotten Deerhoof yet but I have the two others. And they're nice. I'm not sure best-of-'07 material, though - time shall tell. TGTBATQ is a grower, so if you've only listened once or twice before tuning out, go back and give it some time where it's more than just on in the background. There are a number of complex but catchy melodies at play, above the sort of samey instrumentation.
