I refined it a bit, but I'll give you co-credit on it, if we use it. The FKA-EG75 scoring method.

It's interesting to discuss this every year, but the bottom line is that the easiest method is usually the best, so pick the easiest. If you want to choose yours do it. We still have four months for people to disagree, but just remember that people, including you, will always disagree. If you want it to come about, pick three choices and put up a poll, if you find it necessary. Of course, polls have flaws too. After the first page, nobody votes! Mainly because they don't realize there's a poll! The only way to remedy that would be to post on each page reminding people to vote!

Given that many polls only go down to 10 slots, I don't think this is unreasonable. After all, 1 point is more than nothing, which is what 20th place would be getting if we only went 10 or 15 deep. For people who've listened to hundreds of albums, 1 point if probably too few for #20, but for people who've only heard 20-25 albums, I think it's entirely fine, maybe even too much. The only perfect way to do it is to give people a certain amount of points to distribute as they choose, but last year we agreed that that would lead to manipulation and be too cumbersome to compile. Basically, we have to choose between flawed and less flawed polling methods.

Mark brings up a good point. Most of the time people forget what is on the first few pages, especially the first one. If you really want to go with a winner, you go with the FKA-EG75 method. It is the best and hey, it looks cool. But if you really want a consensus then I guess you can do a poll.

More importantly, it makes the #1 album about twice as good as the #7 album, which I think is pretty accurate.

It's the only way to go, buddy. You will realize that this method will work very nicely.

I have realized over the past week I'm not sure if I've listened to 20 albums this year...at least, 20 albums I've enjoyed. My list drops off right now at 13.

13 is fine... why give a few extra points to an album you didn't like?

As far as the best songs list, I'd do something like this. 1. Start around December 15th, and say everyone can submit a list of up to 30 songs 2. On January 1, the nomination process is over and the compiler posts a list of the songs that have received at least three votes. 3. People then have until January 15th to make a new list from this list of nominated songs. What I'm not sure of is whether we should do some type of ordering on the second list. I think it's more difficult to rank songs as opposed to albums, so my initial thought would be no order, but maybe we could have a very loose ranking system like: 1-5. 4 points 6-10. 3 points 11-15. 2 points 16-20. 1 point

I like eric's idea on how to do the song list. The cut-off dates are resonable and I also think we should have some kind of ordering for the songs. Although it is rather difficult to rank songs, having a lenient scoring method is helpful. I would only tweak it so it would be like this: 1-5. 5 points 6-10. 4 points 11-15. 3 points 16-20. 2 points 21-30. 1 point If at the end of the nomination process the top two songs are separated by single digits we can have a run off and do a poll or something to have one clear winner. That's my suggestion--naturally I tweaked eric's method so if we go with this one then we also call it the EG75-FKA scoring method.

My reason behind cutting the 30 list down to 20 post-nomination is that everyone is bound to have some favorites that didn't make the cut. It's harder to make a list of 30 songs when you're only going to have a pool of about 150 to choose from. We could move the dates up if people feel they need more time. Usually there isn't much released in December, so we could really start December 1st with the nomination process if we wanted to.

How is this any easier on the compiler than just using last year's method? I don't see much gain from having a nomination process. I don't mind if you want to do a ranking system, but a nomination process sounds like you're over thinking it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm fairly confident that any two-step process would get voted down. Once I've taken the time to devise a list of thirty songs, I'm not going to want to revise that list because half of my choices didn't make the cut. While I'm at it, I don't support disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing, but I've about had it between this and your damn near identical year end lists. Your fragile(HA!) alliance is sickening. I'm going to vomit if the two of you don't disagree on something soon. DOWN WITH EG75-FKA/FKA-EG75!!! Here's an idea. How about we accept nominations throughout December and January. At the end of January, whoever has the most "nominations" wins. Annnddd we're done. What's that you say, it's no different from last year? Meh.

Not as funny as this. I think it would probably easier and equally accurate to simply do it as it was done last year. I'll even be willing to extend a helping hand when it becomes time to crunch the numbers.
