I'll back up The Shepherd Dog That is an excellent cover. Is it true Sam did it himself? If so, that's amazing. As an aside Doesone does the cover art for Subtle's records. I like it when artists do their own cover art. It's not that hard. ... I'm pretty sure The National did most of the art for their albums since half of them are graphic designers by trade.
Anyway. Cotton Teeth is an excellent album, and the art is emotive, however it's very flat and monotone. It's much better blown up larger. I saw it as a half size Amazon image for a long time before it came in the mail and really appreciated it.

I love the cover to the Iron & Wine album as well. Shoot, I don’t have the album in front of me but when I opened it up it did say who drew it. I think someone else drew the cover and Beam colored it—I think.
I still think that the Okkervil River album has the best cover art of the year. They always have the same guy to their art for them and it always goes well with the music.

OK, I pulled out my copy and it says "Paintings by Sam Beam Designed by Dusty Summers."

I was disapointed by Okkervil River's cover. I love William Schaff. I think his past work for Okkervil River has been extremely disturbing and thought provoking, without being disgusting or graphic. He depicts emotion in a visual way, exactly how Okkervil River does musically. They are a perfect fit for each other. However Stage Names cover was actually sortof boreing and non-descript, in my eyes. It helped when I finally saw it full size and realized it was a tapestry. Don't get me wrong, it's a very impressive show of talent, and a great cover compared to all the other bad covers out there. I just don't think it compares to their past album art.

I also liked the Tunng art cover that RL mentioned. Maybe my favorite- or at least off the top of my head at the moment- is from Husky Rescue "Ghost Is Not Real"

idk wat you guys are talking about with the shins. the wincing the night away cover art is imo one of the best of the year. but all indie cover art is great, usually very trippy and fun to look at.
The album Copia by Eluvum is my favourite cover art of the year. It's done by an artist named Jeannie Paske, who has a series of other really neat paintings. Captures the spirit of the album itself perfectly. Check it out.
Oh, and Radical Face's "Ghost" was quite astonishing as well for whoever posted it up there. This is the first time I've seen it.

Menomena puts A LOT of thought into their cover art (check the limited edition vinyls of I Am the Fun Blame Monster for proof!), so props to them.
The Arcade Fire's cover for Neon Bible is very good. The visuals for their new media campaign to promote the record were very good.
I met the guy who has taken photos for both Band of Horses releases, particularly the cover for Cease to Begin. He's a cool guy. He said the semi-Christian appeal of the photo (meant to be a tribute to the Palm State South Carolina flag) was a happy accident.
