The Shins track you listed is not on the actual album either.

Every song counts as Best of 2007, no matter how it was released. At least, as long as it was first released in 2007 (wherever you live).

Blank Slate and Santa Clara are both b-sides to the Mistaken For Strangers single.

They were added to the end of the itunes release as bonus tracks. I agree that they are both as good or better than anything on Boxer, which is already one of my faves of the year. Santa Clara is especially good.

I have to say "Gospel" is an excellent closer too. The music to it is beautiful, the lyrics, although excellent, hold it back a little however. ...But this is off subject.

Best song of the year is still Battles - Atlas. I can't think of any other song on the album that is half as good, but I can enjoy all of their experimentation just because I know it all leads to Atlas. That makes it worth it.

I'm going to have to check out that National song.

I'm also sure that some songs off of Jens Lekman's new one and St. Vincent's album will make it onto my list when I've had time to digest them.

It took me a couple tries to get where I could give Dan Deacon a fair listen, and I think his song "Wham City" is one of the first real contenders for my favorite song of 2007. There. I said it.

The album as a whole is a masterpiece, but this song in particular always grabs my attention. One of the best closing songs in recent memory.

Is this another one of those iTunes-only tracks? My copy of Boxer ends with "Gospel".

"Santa Clara" is one of two b-sides which can be found on Mistaken For Strangers SINGLE . The other track is "Black SLate". Both songs are G R E A T. Cool

I personally like listening to the album the whole way through because it is just so beautiful as a whole. But were I to be pushed my three favorite tracks from "Canadian Shield" would be "Landmark" "Toboggan" and "Run Off". Which are all amazing tracks by themselves but are even better in the context of the overall album.

Breathe Owl Breathe is a folk band from Michigan they have released three albums the most recent being "Canadian Shield". If you like folk in the mold of Jose Gonzales then you will probably like them as well.

Jose Gonzalez? I certainly wouldn't compare Breathe Owl Breathe to him. I did finally listen to that BOB album, and while it was all right, I guess it just doesn't hit me like it did you, Dr A.

"Savannah Smiles" by Okkervil River flat out knocks me on my ass everytime. It even has a great back-story, which you can read about in p-fork's interview with Will Sheff.

Ya maybe it was because I was listening to Jose at the time, but it really isn't that similar I guess. I guess it is hard to compare to other stuff. It is very slickly produced, naturalist folk with many instruments and dueling male/female vocals.

Really enjoying 300 m.p.h. torrential outpour blues by The White Stripes. Prefer the slower part but still overall a great song.

okay...i streamed the new liars record.. really never gotten into them before and thought they were overrated

the new record is insanely good. it's punk/minimalist music but like trance and stronger melody/songwriting. i'd say deerhunter meets tv on the radio but better. i'd be surprised if a better album comes out this year and this doesn't get the best reviews of the year, hands down, but we'll have to wait and see
