I don't even have the album yet, but I downloaded "While You Were Sleeping" by Elvis Perkins after seeing him perform it on Letterman, and I must say it's my favorite song so far of 2007. Not sure how the entire album sounds, but this is just a great song.
I've been listening to "Deserter" by Matthew Dear almost every day since I first heard it. I just got the album a few hours ago and haven't listened to it yet, but if any of the rest of it is as good as that song, I'll love it.
"Take Me To the Riot" by Stars is one of my new favorites. There are some other really great songs on that album. Some mediocre ones too, but it balances out.

Of the half dozen or so songs I have heard, this one is by far the best. And I concur, it is a very good song (listening to it right now).

Add The Stage Names by Okkervil River to the long list of growers that have come out this year. While it at first seemed a little straightforward to me, each listen has endeared it to me more and more. This album is totally different from Okkervil River's earlier stuff, which can only be described as downer music. This stuff is bright and summery, but not in a flat, shiny way. There is crackling warmth to these songs and nowhere is that more evident than in the joyous choruses, particularly that of "John Allyn Smith Sails".

It has grown on me as well. A lot of people are thrown off by that last song, but the first time I heard it I grinned, and it has yet to have any other effect on me.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

So what song could possibly knock my favorite band's best song off their new album down to just number 2? A song from a band that is quickly becoming my new favorite band, The National. I loved their 2005 LP Alligator and 2007's Boxer just might end up ahead of it. The more and more I listen to it, the more and more I love it. I honestly can't get enough of this album. "Fake Empire," the album's opening track, is a perfect example of this. At first listen, it's a nice tune with a catchy rolling piano part that slowly builds to the climax and then the song ends. You may dismiss it after that first listen, I know I did. Slowly and surely though, it will become a song that you just can't get enough of. I can't say exactly what it is about it, but I've listened to the song probably 50+ times and it still gets me.

I feel exactly the same way about this song, with the exception that I feel Apartment Story off of same album is even better.

I'm not sure if this will be my most or least favorite song of '07, but I'm listening to Graveworm's cover of Bonnie Tyler's 80's hit "I need a hero" (from Footloose - you know). Probably won't end up as my favorite.

I'm going to agree with the people who have mentioned "Someone Great". Fantastic song. Almost as good as Roscoe (my favorite song from last year), but not quite.
Also check out Diamond Heart by Marissa Nadler. She has one of the best voices I've ever heard.

In no order, and not necessarily my favourites of the year. Just the 5 songs that I seem to keep skipping forward/back/forward to in my car.

1) Intervention The Arcade Fire My first favorite track of 2007 remains my favorite. It may just be my favorite track ever. The pipe organ is so perfect it almost makes me cry. It caught me from the start and it is the song that opened me to the rest of Arcade Fire's catalog, both Funeral and the Arcade Fire EP. The glockenspiel in the background perfects the song. One of the few songs that I have not and will never grow tired of. 2) Santa Clara The National The closing tracks of albums are usually relegated to be the least listened, but this song can only be described as a grower. I listen to the album just so I can listen to this song. The album as a whole is a masterpiece, but this song in particular always grabs my attention. One of the best closing songs in recent memory. 3) Bluebells Patrick Wolf Patrick Wolf's latest album is strange. With 9 gems and 5 rather boring tracks, it's hard for me to give an analysis of the album as a whole. However, from the gems, Bluebells stands out. It also happens to have my favorite single line in a song ("Wake me up when the bluebells are ringing..."). All in all, a very good album, if a little inconsistent, but it has some spectacular songs. 4) All the Old Showstoppers The New Pornographers They have done it again. From the title track of Mass Romantic to the closer of Challengers and into the B-sides, the New Pornographers have managed to make every single song they have ever conceived a pop gem. And All The Old Showstoppers may just be their best one yet. I can't get enough of their new album...and it hasn't even come out yet... 5) The Underdog Spoon I have never been a Spoon fan. Can you believe it? For years I have neglected their Spoonly goodness and listened to other bands. And then, on Forkcast, I listened to The Underdog. Intrigued by its catchy tune, I listen to 5(Ga). And this is the story of how I became a Spoon fan. 5(Ga) is spectacular; I love Don't Make Me a Target, You Got Yr Cherry Bomb, and My Little Japanese Cigarette Case, but this one still stands out as my favorite. 6) Atlas Battles After seeing a YouTube video of Atlas, I appreciate it even more. Battles is a collection of some of the best musicians out there. Many times, more than one member of the band is playing more than one instrument. Atlas is probably the song in which they show off their sheer technical aptitude in music. The album is amazing, but Atlas is the pinnacle of their skill. 7) The Past is a Grotesque Animal Of Montreal This song has suffered in the ranks due to the fact that 2007 is simply a knockout year, but it's still the epic that it was when it first came out. Also I tend to lose interest in songs that are acclaimed everywhere by everyone. It's been the indie anthem of the year...and has been on at least 100 year end lists in this forum. Which doesn't take away from it, but it's sickening. Still a great song, though. 8) Nothing At All The Shins This isn't a terribly characteristic song, but I like how the Shins go acoustic here. The jangly guitar and catchy lyrics make it a song that I can always fall back on. The album came out so long ago...but I'm still listening to it. Great song, great album. 9) The Plot White Rabbits I'm at a loss for words. The Plot is just so freaking good. That is all. 10) The Mesopotamians They Might Be Giants Any song that finds a way to incorporate "Ashurbanipal" into it is a winner in my book. The song itself has no gravity at all, and that makes it the perfect closer to an already solid album. The Johns find a way to keep churning out songs that show off their wit and brains, and that are catchy tunes too. What the hell are they doing writing kids' songs?

Is this another one of those iTunes-only tracks? My copy of Boxer ends with "Gospel".

It might be. It doesn't say Bonus Track or anything - I'd always assumed that it was just an album track. If it doesn't "count", per se, I would probably say that my second favorite song off that album is "Green Gloves".
