i have seen it pop up on some british top albums lists for 2007 - i think it is just this year being released oversees. so, maybe he is from europe?

speaking of clipse - any thoughts on the his (i don't remember which one of them it was) recent statements regarding lil wayne?

Well this European is confident that he was listening to HHNF at this time last year. It was on my end of year list actually...

Nice list. Who be John Smith, Ratatat and Wale?
Only artists I haven't heard of.

I'll Sleep When You're Dead is a masterpiece in terms of production imo.

John Smith - Canadian Rapper. Anything out of the record label Peanuts & Corn is pretty much guaranteed to have some excellent beats, and this album has the most consistent production of 2007, imo. Check out mcenroe, Park-Like Setting, and Cadence Weapon too if you haven't.

Ratatat - An electronica band made of a guitarist and a bassist. They remix famous rap songs, and they do it REALLY well. Try to find this, although its out of print so you'll have to get it through less than legal means.

Wale - A DC rapper that flows a lot like Kanye, but his "go-go"-ish beats and swagger is pretty unique. I really liked this mixtape, and the beats aren't ripped, just like the Cool Kids, which I respect more than, say, Lil Wayne's mixtapes.

ratatat's remix albums are mediocre, as are their studio albums. interesting sure, but they are a one trick pony.

cadence weapon is awesome though, only 21 and his new album should be great.

I disagree? lol...If guitar rock is a one-trick-pony, then where have the 70s gone? I also quite like their solo albums.

I just saw Wale mentioned on rapreviews actually, going to have to check him out. So any ideas as to where I can get his mixtape?

Amazon.uk doesn't really sell them and thats where I do all by internet buying, and I've missed out on plenty of supposedly high quality mixtapes by Kidz In The Hall, Skyzoo and Termanology this year.

Buying and mixtapes don't mix. However, emusic has a healthy database of mixtapes, and mixtape only sites, obviously, have plenty of them. http://www.datpiff.com/

looking back i don't think i even bought 10 hip hop cds this year. sucks being broke.

i did find a few used though and one new...

tops has to go to el-p - saw him live at bonnaroo and he was openly hostile to the crowd and people walked off, awesome.

subtle's new one is a close second, someone on this forum turned me on to them, and i thank them all the time.

brother reade and busdriver both have some killer cuts but not what i'd call great.

there must be more but i can't think of them right now, although i'm going to get blasted, some of the most fun i had with hip hop this year was listening to the "hood internets" mixtapes, i know mashup artists aren't making the music but snoop dog and fujiya and miyagi: priceless

whatever genre it is, el-p and the music he puts out on his label is better than 99% of "hip hop" out there.

Some supposed hip hop fan I am... still not heard any of these albums! In fairness, Lupe Fiasco's isn't out in the UK yet, but still...
