I just heard MF Doom's newest stuff playing as a teaser in my local record store, and I was really impressed. I'd read it was supposed to be inspired by Adult Swim's cartoons, and I was skeptical before I heard it, but it doesn't sound contrived or goofy at all, really; it sounds quite natural, even the extended vocal samples from the actual shows. From what I heard it sounded like it hung together well, and I was more initially impressed by this than I was by his Madvillain project because these songs sound a bit more fleshed out, a bit less anxious. Has anyone else heard it?

I have had it for a month or so and have listened to it numerous times and am not impressed at all.
It is not even comparable to madvillainy.I find the 'skits' to be completely annoying and not funny.

I really dont get this themed album stuff, and i have never liked skits.

And as a surprise to myself i am finding myself less impressed with mf doom.He really needs to slow down and choose his projects better. His writing sounds worse than ever.

I tend to have the same reaction to "themed albums," but The Mouse and the Mask really appealed to me. I was only able to give it about half a listen so many of the lyrics probably washed away, but I thought his lines were at least as clever as they were on Madvillainy. As far as the specific project is concerned, I think it was a fine choice for MF DOOM--he seems to be at his best when he's being ambiguous and obfuscating within one or more of his personas, and it seems like the Adult Swim gimmick would give him a perfect opportunity to swim around in those different identities.

I think this album is quite solid, with only a couple of filler tracks, and several very strong ones. I don't think Doom is slipping at all, he's been quite consistent in my opinion. That said, of the albums I own I consider Vaudeville Villain my favourite, and Danger Doom could potentially come second, but I'll give it more time to form any hard opinions. The skits are exactly what I'd expect from an Adult Swim collaboration, as with any hip-hop album skits they get tired quickly, but at least these have some sort of purpose thematically. The hottest tracks (to me) are dispersed evenly thoughout the disc, which I appreciate. It is definately not as consistently tight an album beginning to end as Madvillainy, but I think it has more standout songs.

hit the nail on the head with this one. danger doom is average at best. madvillainly is classic at worst. still amazes me that 'lib made the entire "fancy clown" beat with just a record player and sp-303 in a hotel room in brazil. the chops on that beat are rediculous, so hard to do on the 303.

...well it may not be an all-time classic, but we'll always have Benzie Box when we need a good belly laugh. His name is Doom indeed... Big Grin

the second viktor vaughn album has some good tracks. i love the one with kool keith especially.

i can see why people don't like it, though. especially after the awesomeness that was vaudeville villain.
