Has anybody heard about the J Dilla's new album I've only read three reviews and I'm already excited... Each review said it was a masterpiece.

Dusted reviewed the shining already. In short, they said it was good, but not as good as donuts.

I think both albums by J Dilla were great (I put The Shining as my personal number 1 album for 2006 here). I totally liked Donuts and the soul samples were ab-soul-utely groovy, but I preferred The Shining for the full-length tracks and rap lyrics. The Shining seemed more of a complete album to me; while Donuts was more of an ultra-smooth, instrumental collection. I praise both.

I agree with you as close to 100% percent as possible. While The Shining isn't my number one album of the year, it will definetely be in my top ten and Donuts is a great album in its own right. I wholeheartedly agree with on why I do think that The Shining is better. It only makes you wonder how much better it would have been had Jay Dee finished it himself as opposed to someone else finishing it.

My favorite album of the year was Donuts... Even though I liked The Shining it didn't make my top 20, I just found it to be more conventional than Donuts but don't get me wrong I thought it was a great album...

Yes and no. I mean, when you're working with samples, and in particular vocal samples, little bits of the vocals end up on the final mix. So it can't really be called a straight instrumental album, but in execution it's closer to instrumental than any other category. I like how the samples get the spotlight, which is why donuts was my #2. But I haven't heard the shining yet.

I liked Donuts more. The Shining sure has some great moments, though.
