I've recently been given a DVD with about 20 albums on from a friend whose into hip-hop. I've never really been into hip hop but I have liked most of what I've heard (De La Soul, Jurassic 5, Dizzee Rascal...)
I'm not sure if all the albums fit into this catergory but here's whats on the dvd.
Beastie Boys - Check your head, Hello Nasty & Paul's Boutique BIG L - ? Blackalicious - The Craft Buck 65 - Synesthesia Cassetteboy - Dead Horse clouddead - cLOUDDEAD cLOUDDEAD - Ten Del The Funkee Homosapien - Both Sides Of The Brain Deltron 3030 - s/t Dilated Peoples - The Platform DJ Food - Kaleidoscope DJ Format - Music For The Mature B-Boy DJ Shadow - Diminishing Returns DJ Shadow - In-Fluxuations (Discs 1&2) DJ Shadow - Live! In Tune And On Time DJ Shadow - Preemptive Strike DJ Shadow - Schoolhouse Funk 1 & 2 DJ Shadow - The Private Press & The Private re-press Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst Fingathing - Superhero Music Handsome boy modeling school - So...how's your girl? Kool Keith - Diesel Truckers
It's kind of a lot to go at and I havent even heard of half those artists so I guess I'm asking for opinions on whats good and what to listen to first... thanks
IMO, the only good stuff on there is Big L, Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith), Beastie Boys (Paul's Botique only), and Deltron 3030....
A lot of people here will tell you that the stuff from Clouddead, Buck 65, etc. is good....and I respect that. But that type of stuff just isn't my flavor at all. It's all kinda nerdy I guess....nothing like De La or J5.
The only stuff I could really listen to from that list is Dr Octagon, Big L and a bit of Dilated Peoples. But that's just me. The majority of what I didn't mention I would clump as distinctly too "alternative". And for the rest I just don't give.

I've been listening to these a lot over the last week or so and am really enjoying it. One thing that I've found though is that a lot of these records are really long, around 60 or 70 minutes which makes it pretty difficult to listen to them all the way through, I cant complain though it just gives more to go at I suppose.
Records I've really enjoyed so far are Deltron 3030 which I cant stop listening to, DJ Food, Dr Octagon and anything by DJ Shadow. cLOUDEAD seems different but cool, I havent properly listened to it yet.
I don't wanna sound weird but I was expecting everything to be really difficult to get into and wasn't expecing to like much of it but what I've heard is just really easy to listen to and pretty chilled...
Cassetteboy is some funny shit by the way. It's samples taken from various places all mixed together basically just to make celebrities swear and say funny stuff. If you can find a copy I recommend it
