Hi

I'm looking for indie approved rap or hip hop albums. I know this must seem weird, but I just want 4-5 "classics". I'm not looking for the best albums, just for the "rap for indie kids" one.

The Roots, Jurassic 5, Public Enemy, Talib Kweli and Blackstar tends to be the kinda of rap my indie rock friends 'approve' of.

This is a dumb thread, you shouldn't want "rap for the indie kids." We can recommend some of the good rap that we know, the stuff Turenne listed is good, solid hip-hop.

I'll see where this thread goes, but for now, I am getting the inkling to link the other threads about top rappers and albums and closing this one. If you want to get into rap/hip-hop, you should want to get into all kinds of rap/hip-hop, not just the "rap for indie kids"--whatever that is.

A lot of boarders here like hip-hop and indie rock, simultaneously, but if you want to get into hip-hop, you should go a little deeper.

I can kind of see where Mathieu is coming from. I'm guessing he's asking what hip-hop he might like as an indie rock fan - hip-hop for people who don't really like hip-hop that much. Fair enough question. I wouldn't call it stupid.

Some older school recommendations from me would include Public Enemy, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, and the Beastie Boys.

I think his question is completely valid: there's a definite difference between "top rappers" and rap indie kids like.

Most indie kids I know listen to (aside from the classics listed):
Sage Francis (I can't stand him)
Hieroglyphics
Deltron 3030
Atmosphere
Kool Keith/ Dr. Octagon
Del the Funkee Homosapien
Devin the Dude

FragileKidA : I'm just looking for a few rap albums I would like before trying to go in deeper. And I think there are some albums, not necessarily the best ones, that I'm going to like more, at least for now, and those are the ones that people like me like ( guy that listens only to indie rock ).

Pretty much all of Def Jux. El-P, RJD2, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Cage, that gang. It's the first thing I think of when I think of "indie rap" per se.

The Stones Throw label should be good too, that's Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, MF Doom, J Dilla/Jay Dee and all combinations and alter egos therein (Madvillian, Jaylib, Lootpack, Quasimoto, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, etc. etc.)

There's also Busdriver but he seems to be a polarizing figure :/

I heartily second this suggestion by Nhaz. Great topic too! Stones Throw recently did a 10 year anniversary compilation (2 discs). It's a perfect place to start, and vary's from some really left field stuff to old school hip-hop. A lot of Stones Throw is considered "rap for weed smokers", which I agree with in some ways. The production is generally dense with some wtf moments. The thing I appreciate above all with Stones Throw is that the artists generally avoid rapping about material "bling" and "bitches". Definitely check them out.

Last year's Subtle album, For Hero:For Fool is very strange. If you like bands like Animal Collective, you will probably enjoy it. It's very musical, and Doseone has pretty much the strangest delivery out there (except for maybe Busdriver).

For more tuneful, indie friendly rap, try the Canadian rapper K-Os. A lot of acoustic guitar based grooves and features socially concious messages.

I like the Subtle album, I listened to it twice today and it's really great.
