I love that album, but The Streets aren't hip hop.
Not sure what to make of this topic. I know half a dozen indie kids from work who are really into Jay-Z. Does that make him indie approved? They went to see The Game recently too... so does he become indie approved?
Or is indie approved an actual kind of rap that shares musical values with indie rock? Handsome Boy Modelling School, or Deltron maybe?
I know my first paragraph sounds a bit sniffy. I'm not trying to be... I'm genuinely perplexed by this topic.

Alright, so I'll take my mission as giving some suggestions as to what an indie rock fan would like if he wanted to get into Hip-Hop.Off the top of my head...
Things Fall Apart - The Roots (essential) Blackstar - Blackstar I'll Sleep When You're Dead - EL-P Beauty And The Beat - Edan Disposable Arts - Masta Ace Reflection Eternal - Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek The Listening - Little Brother Fantastic Vol. 2 - Slum Village Like Water For Chocolate - Common Aquamini - Outkast (essential) A Piece Of Strange - Cunninlynguists Liquid Swords - GZA (essential)
When you've gotten through that lot, come back to me. At the very least get into some Wu-Tang/Outkast/The Roots shit.
and the new El-P is outtasite. Aesop Rock's new one is awesome as well.
If you wanna go back a few years, get Nas' 'Illmatic' and Wu-Tang's '36 Chambers'. They're both a little bit more mainstream, but the production is impeccable and don't have much filler.
i agree with many choices thought i might throw out a couple that i don't think i've seen here...
dangerdoom - all indie kids like adult swim! the coup - last album especially, live instruments, killer beats, and wicked rhymes dr. octagon/dr. doom (era kool keith) - just fuckin' nuts rhymesayers label - can get a little emoish, but some of the dudes can flat out spit
so that's a couple of the top of my head, let me know what ya think

I think it's a good starting point for someone that likes Indie Rock, but thinks all Hip-Hop probably sucks.
i had never heard or heard of subtle before, just checked out a couple songs and i must say good call, digging the vibe, might be a weekend pickup.
Don't pass it up. I was afraid I would only like the couple of songs I heard off of it, and ended up hooked the whole way through.
Also, see if you can find the song "Middleclass Haunt" It's a different version of one of the songs on the album, but it has Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs on it, and it's a best song in month kindof a discovery.
It sounds like a Handsome Furs remix of the Subtle song.

Thanks everyone. So far, I haven't exactly found what I was looking for. Most of the albums I've listened to are pretty good, but I don't see myself listening to them. Maybe what I want doesn't exist...
This is what I like so far : Subtle For Hero For Fool ( 8/10 ) Kanye West Graduation ( 7/10 ) Kanye West Late Registration ( 7/10 ) Aesop Rock Labor Day ( 6.5/10 ) Madvillain Madvillainy ( 6/10 )
I don't really like : Talib Kwelli Quality ( 5/10 ) Quasimoto The Unseen ( 5/10 )
I'm going to update my list so you get what I like and what I'm looking for.
Have you listened to Girl Talk's "Night Ripper". It's not Hip Hop or rap in and of itself, but it introduced me to a lot of different Hip Hop styles that I enjoy and can respect.
It's hard to explain it's genre though. Just listen to some clips if you haven't heard it before.

The two albums that remind of Girl Talk's album are Spank Rock's Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo and Plastic Little's She's Mature, both of which were released as well last year. Same kind of Hip-Hop/Dance on LSD sound to the Girl Talk album, plus the raps are absolutely filthy. Think 3 6 Mafia or UGK, just tongue firmly in cheek.
TBH I have a habit, rightly or wrongly, of putting the likes of MIA, Spank Rock,Dizzee Rascal and Girl Talk in the same boat musically. Basically Hip-Hop/Rap thats completely out of control.
