Fuck this overrated, most important...most disliked crap.
Lets get down to the nitty...There are 2 artists in the indie rap world...who are easily heads and shoulders above the rest.Well...maybe.

I was either going to start a Buck 65 thread or a Sage Francis thread(filmore).I decided to talk about my personal favorite artist out right now.Hmmn...where to start...i am not going to try to write some half assed biography or something...just start a conversation.

Buck 65...Stinkin Rich...Ref Rich...Or what his mother calls him Rich Tefry. He was one half of probabbly my favorite one off collaboration, that would be The Sebutones "50/50 Where it counts".I also hear they put out some stuff under the same name called "Psoriasis"But i have not hear that.

If you go to yahoo groups and type in buck 65..you can get a personal message from buck himself every month or so...even though it has been like going on 4 months now. What he is doin...working on...stuff like that.Which is really cool...what better way to keep your fans...have them join a fan club...and write to them often enough.Check it out.

There is an website that is soley dedicated to all of his work and all of his albums.Where to find them...where to buy them...and all that jazz.It is here

I will run down his albums...

THB-It was nice...fun...a little too safe.KIn dof smelt like "sellout".But there is so definate classic cuts on it.

Language Arts and Wierdo Magnet-These albums are kind of the unsung classics in his collection of albums.Lo-Fi...crackly.Well arranged as usual.

Vertex-Is it his best? Not personally...but there are some classic songs ie. centaur, sleep aponea, the blues pt 1...and so on.

Man Overboard-The only album he put ou thru anticon.Ver y good of course.

Square and Synesthesia-I thin kthese are both his most complete works...from beggining to end.I think square is personally my favorite...it sounds so clean.I like the lofi...but square and thb sounded nice and clean...what a difference a nice studio does.No more 8 tracks.

I have to confess i did not even own most of his albums until warner started to re-release them. What was very nice though was...buck himself got a chance to change alot when they were re released.Especially Synesthesia...

Anyways...i hope someone else posts how important buck is to rap...i am nervous about his new album coming out on v2...i hope he throws it back a bit to his roots...serchin for breaks...and alot more scratchin.

I don't even really consider him hip-hop anymore. He's a poet. At that, he's definitely one of my faves. If you've seen him live, there sure is a big spoken word, jazz lounge vibe to it. I'd like to see him make more DnB, though. He's only ever made like one track.

Yeah, yeah, Mark! Man Overboard is my favorite album of his, even the intro gives me goosebumps. I have the original pressings of that and Language Arts, I think I got him to sign those covers as well, but I don't quite recall as he has signed a few things for me. My Man Overboard copy has no song titles and no info inside whatsoever, it is perfectly in tone with the album's lyrical and musical content. Vertex has some of my fave Buck songs, most of which Imprezu already mentioned above. I do enjoy Square and Synthesia quite a lot, but they don't have the pleasant memories of discovery attached that Vertex and Man Overboard do for me. Language Arts is good, although I have not listened to it in a long while. Wierdo Magnet I can't say I have spent a lot of time listening to, as it sounds a little similar to Language Arts, and because I picked that album up rather late and his voice is still not up to par in my opinion at that stage of his career. THB is a solid album that reflects where he was in his life at that point, but unfortunately I would say it is not as lyrically interesting as the 4 albums that proceeded it. I do enjoy the progress he is making compositionally that the album shows. All of the songs flow perfectly, end where they should and are fully realized. There are no tracks that shift from one song to the next without a break as some of his earlier albums had, and I appreciate that added focus on making a strong, cohesive album. The remixes for Sore and 463 a well as the bonus tracks those singles contain are excellent too. On the other hand, his last two live shows have seemed a little tired and stale to me. I am not fond of hearing the same between-song stories told at different shows, and I have grown weary of the Tom Waits mimicry, especially with the glitter in the pockets. As well he promised to play a song for me about three or four shows ago I think, and he has still not played it! It's a song called Giants from an album he did with a jazz drummer named Jerry Granelli. The album is called Music Has It's Way With Me, it was released in 1999 under the name Granelli, and Buck is listed under his old alias of Stinkin' Rich as both dj and rapper, although his style is much more akin to spoken word on that album. The track itself is basically a rhyming retelling of the major principles of Zecharia Sichin's book-The 12th Planet. Exclaim magazine described the album as "like the intersection point between Medeski, Martin & Wood, the Roots and MC 900 ft. Jesus", which is pretty accurate. I am a big Buck fan, and I hope that he can continue to create quality music, while maintaining a balance between the underground and the mainstream.

I think Square is still my fave. I love that Alfred Hitchcock bit. All 4 tracks are wicked. I think that one really set him apart for me. That album is the epitome of progressive hip-hop.

There's some cool tracks on his new ... um...album I guess: an acoustic version of "The Centaur" and a Woody Guthrie cover.

Dont think I could have said it better myself.Just the parts about buck.

I cant wait to see what the press and fans think of his new one.Should be interesting.

Fucking genious is right.I hope he never blows up(not likely)So fans could talk about him like some kind of fable or mystery when ther are 50.Who knows he may still be making records then.

Well.I have been trying to prove this for a day or so now.So i figured iw ould just post it and see what people thought.
This is in relation to buck 65...but...

I was watching the movie 'carrie' a few days ago.I have never noticed it before.Butif u listen to a part of themovie it so sounds like the main part of 'the centaur'.The most famous song by Buck 65.I thought that part must have been sampled from a movie.

I would really like to see someone elses opinion.I am gonna go rent the movie to confirm or deny...But the part i saw and heard. Was towards the end where carrie gets homecoming queen or something like that. And she is walking up the stairs to the stage...right at that moment.

Anyone who has heard the song "the ceantaur" will recognize it.It sounds as if it is sped up a tiny bit.

So if anyone cares check it out and get back to me.I will also post again when i hear it.Not that its a big deal or anything.
Just curious.

My girlfriend and I used to try and pinpoint his samples quite often. On Man Overboard there is a song that samples from Metallica, it's either from Battery of Master of Puppets, I don't remember now, but that one drove me nuts trying to figure out where I knew it from. I finally thought I figured it out and put on MOP and was correct! The Carrie sample we had discussed as something we were sure was from a movie, but wasn't verified until a couple years ago while watching the film itself. When that part came up we both just looked at each other with our jaws dropped, like, "it's from Carrie?!?" Great sampling!

Buck

Kind of an egotistacal review. But nonethless informative and entertaining.

Also another confirmation of the centaur sample.I came across it just about as he did...haphazardly.
