There are at least 20 million more people who believe the above than there are people who believe only indie sounds good. With such a large, disposable audience, all mainsteam media also agree with and perpetuates the above. Indiots aren't the problem. They can barely post in internet forums without mainstream whores riding their asses back into obscurity. Power in numbers backed by a horrible amount money... Mainstream wins, real human culture loses.

That sucks for indiots then. But I thought being indie celebrates its obscurity? If 20 gazillion people listened to indie then it's not indie no more. Indiots should be happy they're obscure.

I'm guessing I'm probably an "Indiot". I think I started on 1964. The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who,et.al., always had more, I mean less money to work with. Wait a minute...craft...craft is what "Indiots" or "Anti-Indiots" care about, right? Originality? Balls? Vaginas? Come on, now, there's a lot of fuckin' sick NEW joints to chill to, right? Something yesterday is OLD, and something decades ago is ridiculous.

Wait a minute. WTF am I doing in this thread?

I think you're a fair mod, and the like, but I'm gonna have to disagree. Liking the Beatles, The Stones, and the Kinks, doesn't necessarily make you one of those people Imprezu21 referred to (oh so accurately) as "indiots."

Ask Filmore what it's like to be one, and I'm sure you'll realize you don't quite fall into that category. Anyway, my point is that indie artists are all well and good, but when you dismiss a "mainstream" artist just because he/she is signed to a major label (and because you operate under the infantile notion that it'll boost your "indie cred,") then you may want to seek help.

It's an ongoing debate. I have often fallen to that side but many would say that in the just because the White Stripes are on a major label, they are still indie. Depends on how seriously you define it. I thought the last White Stripes album kinda licked, label or no label.

i agree, there are wayy too many people supporting these artists, but every genre is flooded with them.

if you use this logic then the best bands ever are probabbly aerosmith, u2 and the eagles. If you are solely basing it on how much money they make.

at least the underground or "indie" artists are willing to do what they want, and make an album that they want instead of making an album they think will go platinum.

How many of these bands and artists stay indie by choice though and how many have no option? I'm sure if the gravy train was passing by, some indie artists would be at the ticket counter.

Easy, Mariah. Don't get your panties in a bunch. We all know how easy you freak out if someone suggests there is music outside the Top 40.

"Hell On Earth (Instrumental)" by Mobb Deep - This track spells two words: Ultimate Chill

"Krazy" by Tupac - Beats are so dope and hypnotizing you'll find yourself committing the mortal sin of not even caring for the lyrics.

"The Roof (Dope Remix)" by Mobb Deep, Mariah Carey, Method Man & Redman - You want some oldskool R&B-tinged hiphop? You got here a very overlooked track created by an ultra collaboration. The entire track is luscious --- and watch out for the scratch at 3:21 Wink

"The Come Up" by AZ - Easily one of my most favorite MC's, AZ never fails to deliver the illest joints. So ill, you're gonna die tomorrow.

"Pain" by Tupac - I've already mentioned this track on the previous page, but with its distinct soul and beat, I can not help but reiterate.

Other mentions:

"Shook Ones" by Mobb Deep
"Shakey Dog" by Ghostface Killah
"Queen Bitch" by Lil' Kim
"Sunshine" by Lil' Flip & Lea
"You're All I Need" by Method Man & Mary J Blige

I disagree. If you say that hip hop has no chillout effect at all, then you haven't heard everything. One big example is the first track I mentioned, out of a million others.

Imprezu,
While you're certainly entitled to your opinion, I will never understand why people go into threads they apparently have no qualification to fully discuss, only to trash the subject. Tsk, tsk.

Anyway, Carlito:
Good list. I'll see your "The Roof" and raise you Mariah and Bone Thuggs' "Breakdown".
Likewise, I'll see your 'Pac mentions and raise you "High Speed" (Tupac featuring The Outlawz).

Others:
"All That I Got Is You" - Ghostface and Mary Blige.
"Drugs" - Lil' Kim (can't believe you think of "Queen Bitch" as a chill-out track).
"B.I.B.L.E." - Killa Priest
"Vibin'" (Remix) - Boyz II Men, featuring Meth, Treach, Craig Mack, Busta Rhymes
"Come Close" - Common & Mary
"They Say" - Common, Kanye, John Legend
"How Could I?" - John Forte
"Boogie Man Song" - Mos Def
"2nd Childhood" - Nas
"Love Jones" - RZA

There is not alot that passes me up, but for ME people rapping does not chill me out, it gets me hyped up.

its all good though, differing opinions.

u dont need to point anything out for me.

I wasn't being condescending by pointing anything out to you. I'm sure a dude like you probably even takes Mobb for granted coz they're not underground, and I'm positive you know a lot about hiphop in general. I was just taken aback by the comment you made that hiphop has *absolutely* no chillout effect at all, making me think that the Instrumental version of Hell On Earth (as one specific example) passed you up. That's all. Wasn't trying to offend you, dude.

Imprezu
Ordinarily, I would respond to that in kind, but if I've learned nothing else from Filmore, I've learned that I get irritated by these childish back-and-forths. So I'll try to keep this civil.

First of all, you only LATER qualified your statement as "for ME, rap isn't chillout music."

That read more like a general attack on "rap" than a statement of personal preference. I may not like the general direction mainstream Rap is going in, but it was still my first real genre, so while I respect people stating opinions, I can't stand when people make blanket statements denigrating it.

Misunderstanding cleared up? Let's hope so.

As far as my Boyz II Men selection goes, if you'd actually heard the song in question, you'd know that they only sang hooks between the verses the other guys spit.
(Think "Flava in Ya Ear" remix, but with a sung hook).

Ahh, not again with these annoying indie-junkie comments. Unlike what seems "cool" around here, I don't avoid mainstream artists in order to ensure my "indie-meter" doesn't drop too low. I listen to mostly indie and retro R&B, and a little mainstream Hip-Hop. I'll never listen to 50 Cent or Eminem, but I won't cut out Jay-Z and Nas in the name of bullshit non-conformism.

I have no interest in Filmore, and considering his days-long obsession with my posts, I suggest you direct those comments to him.

And counting my posts? What mature, logical purpose could that serve? How does that boost your argument?

OK, having gotten that out of my system, I must apologize to the mods on this site. Sorry about these little back-and-forths. I guess these dudes just kinda "find" me.

I certainly don't direct them to you or vice versa. One thing you learn around here after awhile is to be thick-skinned. I still think we have the best-behaved boards on the internet, but if I'm wrong, let me know and I'll splat several people with my Terry Gilliam Monty Python foot right now.

One other thing you can do is use the Private Message function to straighten out misunderstandings outside of the Main Boards. Everybody uses it, so go for it. You can always PM me too, Cool, if you "can't get no satisfaction."
