Hey everyone, I've just joined this, just wondered what buyers thought of the Soulja Boy album because I was thinking of getting it and I wondered if you guys had any feedback.
From what I've heard, the album is a load of shit and reflects the ringtone direction hip hop might be taking, but then again everyone said how crap Sean Kingston's album was and I loved it =]
I love Crank That and from the little snippets/samples I've heard he seems all right.
Okay, so in Crank That he displays all the musical talent of a five-year-old, I was already aware of that, but what I really wanted to know is, if somebody has this album, whether all the songs are like this.
I have heard they are, and if they are all like this I won't be touching it - one is enough, but after a few listens it gets tiresome.
So, I'll rephrase - anyone who has the Soulja Boy album, would you agree with the general consensus that the album is total shit and doesn't vary at all from Crank That? Or does it have songs on it that actually reflect an up and coming talent, rather than several doses of patched-together beats that were okay the first time but eventually make you want to stamp on the CD several times over?
I don't think I need to have heard the album to tell you that it blows. Like most other hip-pop acts today, rapping really doesn't even occur. Anybody can put a couple retarded bars together and then talk slowly over a simple beat.
Maybe read some of the threads in this forum, get some suggestions for hip-hop that doesn't suck. Look underground.

Fair enough, I take your point. I would like to point out that at no point have I praised Soulja Boy's musical talent or status in hip-hop. Crank That has enough about it to stick in the memory for a while, but if all his songs follow the make-up of this one, he won't get very far.
As for reading threads and 'looking underground', I have done the former already, since reading threads is fairly important if you want to contribute to a forum. if a particular artist pops up in the charts with a sweet track or two, be it hip hop, pop, rap, R'n'B, rock or whatever, I'll get the album and rarely be disappointed. Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco are my favourite hip hop artists, anything along those lines is good enough for me

UHPS. Did you just put Kanye and Lupe in the same category (letalone paragraph) as Soulja Boy? Mmmm, bye.
It pays to kill anyone who has information.

Can we give this guy a break? He seems intelligent and it's not like he came here screaming about how Soulja Boy is the new Rakim, or something. All he wanted to know was if someone had heard Soulja Boy's album...sheesh. Go ahead and ignore this thread, but there's no need to flame him.
Personally, I haven't heard it and I don't like the song, but I *have* heard (and liked) albums even more embarrassing, and I post on these boards. So it's not unreasonable to think that someone here might have heard it. FWIW Christgau gave it an A-, though it's unclear how much that grade has to do with the music. Virtually everyone else gave it the lowest rating possible.
At the very least there's something to respect in the fact that this kid was then just 17 and completely self-made. There's nothing prefabricated or inauthentic about Soulja Boy, unlike a lot of pop (and) rap around today.

There were 7 posts in this thread before yours. I wasn't referring to you, if that wasn't clear.
The guy said he liked "Crank That" and he was interested in whether the whole album was like it. Replies by Mike Honcho and RadiantSilvergun were way too hostile given that simple request. He wasn't asking for us to judge whether his music taste was good enough, and he wasn't asking where we thought Soulja Boy stood in the grand pantheon of hip hop. It IS possible to start a thread here that isn't intended to provoke argument or judgment.
Jesus fucking Christ. I'm hostile? Meh. I honestly don't care, but reading through this thread all I said was that Soulja Boi was garbage and that if Isaac was really interested in hip-hop he should check out some of the threads. Sure I used a couple negative adjectives, but I think that the 'artist' in question merits that type of response. If that's hostile, I should probably just stop posting altogether.

Look, you just don't get it. This guy comes to this forum for the first time and dares to ask a question about Soulja Boy, and he first gets accused of being a spammer and then his taste is belittled. Is this the way you act in real life? I don't know what you like, but let's say Radiohead since most of the regulars here seem to love them. Imagine going up to a group of people you don't know and saying, hey, I like that new Radiohead single, has anyone heard the album? They respond by telling you that Radiohead makes music for retards and that you should listen to some real music. Are you going to try to talk to those people again? Probably not, and neither has this Isaac fellow.
Just forget it, I'm not trying to make enemies here. This is just an example of the problem with anonymous internet forums, particularly once they're well-established. Nothing is ever lost by being more civil and welcoming towards people you don't know, particularly when they show that they do have some intelligence. God knows we could use a different point of view on things around here.
Isaac, basically, by perusing the Rap/Hip Hop threads, you should be able to find artists worth discovering. A good place to start might be the "All Time Favorite Hip Hop Albums" thread. After seeing that, you might understand why people here tend to disregard Soulja Boy. Hope you find something to your liking
Mix a little folly with your plans: It is sweet to be silly at the right moment.

1. Being that said poster didn't have many posts when this thread was created, it wouldn't be unlikely for it to be spam, we get quite a bit of it around here. 2. Nowhere in this thread did I 'belittle' anyone's tastes. I did not explicitly say "You're tastes suck" or even anything remotely like it. Instead, I first posted a link proving Soulja Boy to be a no talent hack and later suggested they check out some of the threads around here to see what they like. 3. Isaac never said Soulja Boy was his favorite artist EVRE. He simply said he only heard the singles and wanted to know if the album was worth checking out. I tried to demonstrate that it was not.
No hard feelings, I just think you misread me a little.

yes, you are. I posted in the jazz forum, letting everyone know about a live Internet concert broadcast, and you jumped all over it, insisting it get deleted.

You're a fucking spammer, and I still think the thread you created should be deleted. You have no intentions of being a regular member, your thread was created under the guise that you found something we might be interested in, while you your intentions were clearly just free advertisement. Truth be told I'm a really nice guy, generally.
You want a welcome? Blow me (preferably with some type of condiment lubrication).

yes, you are a meany. I posted in the jazz forum, letting everyone know about a live Internet concert broadcast that I am affiliated with, and you jumped all over it, insisting it get deleted. It was not very nice. All I'm trying to do is put a little money in my pocket by lying to large groups of unsuspecting people and hoping that the free advertisement helps me.
you're the type that thinks this is your your playground, and that no one else can step into the sandbox and speak without your express blessing. I mean, I don't plan on actually staying here but my voice should be just as pertinent as yours (even though mine sounds like a commercial)
You should welcome new forum members instead of bashing them...Goodbye
Goodbye. A little advise, less teeth.

OK, I deleted the jazz topic because it was Spam but let's try to stay on topic here. Don't get too vicious/vulgar with each other because then I will have to come and 'clean up' this thread as well. Carry on.
