I know there is already a Dr. Octagon thread but I figured this was important enough to merit its own thread. Let me start out by saying that the new Dr. Octagon album released on June IS NOT and SHOULD NOT be considered an offical Dr. Octagon album.

While critics have panned this album as being mostly awful, the real Dr. Octagon (AKA Kool Keith) had very little to do with the creation of this project, and did not sanction the release of this album. In fact, he only raps for about fifteen minutes of the album, but this was not even originally intended to be released.

CMH records released the "return of Dr. Octagon" and what they simply did was this : they had the rights to some sessions recorded by Kool Keith and WITHOUT his knowledge or involvement, CMH hired One Watt Sun (A german production team of all places) to put some beats on top of it. If you look at CMH's past releases, http://www.emusic.com/label/121/121690.html , it is pretty clear that most of the output of this label are cover songs of famous artists. Examples include, "The String Quartet Tribute to Tool's Aenima" and "Picking on Brooks & Dunn Volume 2: A Bluegrass Tribute". In fact, there are no hip hop act signed to this label. Even more disturbing, none of the artists on this label even perform their own music. That is pretty shady if you ask me, and someone as famous as Kool Keith would never sign with this label to release an album.

Kool Keith has gone on concert and has denied any involvement with the release of this album. I'm totally surprised that NONE of the major magazine has even mentioned this, and seem completely oblivious to this downright stealing of the Dr. Octagon's name. This is a disgusting example of a label taking advantage of the artist to turn out the maximum profit, and everyone should be aware of it. Everyone please do not buy this album, and when someone mentions that the new Dr. Octagon album sucked, please tell them that its not a Dr. Octagon album.

You're a studious man Subrock, but I can't figure this thing out. There are a few guys like you who are online, zealously "exposing" this record as some sort of fraud and a dastardly exploitation of Kool Keith.
This may all be true, but if so, why is Keith touring too promote it? Why did he go on the cover of The Wire magazine promoting it? Why is he doing radio spots promoting it? Why is Kutmasta Kurt apparently doing a remix of one of the tracks?
It just doesn't add up.
Anyway, I'm a big fan of this record sonicaly (it could use a couple more tracks of 'Trees' or 'Aliens' calibre, but hey), and I feel pretty confident that some of the money I spent on it is going into Keiths' pocket. All the EVIDENCE points that way.

First of all, even though Keith is touring under Dr. Octagon's name, he somehow isn't promoting the album at all. I saw him in Toronto and he didn't do a single song from it; in fact his entire set was kinda flat. Which was really unfortunate because I had such extraordinarily high hopes for him. Anyways, I am pretty sure it is a fake, which is a pity because the production is extremely fresh; it breaks a lot from that Mr. Nogatco stuff which is basically the same bland beat that he pulled out for Black Elvis and Dr. Dooom and so on and so forth. I will be very surprised if the "official" Return of Dr. Octagon turns out to be better than the "fake" one.

sorry man, i dont think it is a fake, i just brought it, and it is banging kool keith crazyness out and out, so i am kinda confused
i have been doing my research and it seems there is a smear campaign againist this album,
i guess it must be headed by someone who got burnt along the way, firstly one watt sun are an australian production team who composed the album in germany...kool keith is touring the album and i aint seen the show, but keith from what i understand rarely does an amazing set, thats if he turns up.

if i was you i would ignore the bullshit check out www.myspace.com/droctagon to see for your self M3

I know this is kind of late to chime in about this, but what the hell. If you actually bothered to read the interview in The Wire he basically says that he had nothing to do with the record and that he thinks it's terrible.

Hmmm....

One thing is certain; the first Dr. Octagon album is a lot better than the second.
