Fishscale is the best album of the year so far... bar none. thats a matter of opinion of course. i think its a staggering achievement. 24 tracks that are of such quality that most MCs could not have concocted stuff this good over an entire career. the beats are tight and Ghostface can still tell a story better than anyone else around. an instant classic from start to finish. anyone else heard it yet?

I haven't heard it, or much of anything else, lately, but these folks mostly have. Smiler

I just got my copy today after work.

As usual, I'm impressed, as I've always been with Ghostface's work.

The soul-inflected tracks make me drool.

Can't wait to get it. It's great to see that now all the Meth hype has died down, Ghost remains the only Wu member releasing consistently great material.

It's reached a point where I don't even go through the standard "I hope he doesn't screw up" nervousness when I hear he's got a new record out.

You can thank indie kingpins MF Doom, Madlib, and Jay Dee for producing most of those beats.

Are we still on this whole silly indie debate? Yes, Filmore. We get it.
Major-label products eat babies and indie rules the fucking world (from the underground, of course... otherwise, they'd be just like those wretched mainstreamers).

I'm tired of that whole idiotic discussion, so please don't bring it in here too.

Topic:
Jay Dilla worked on the album? I've gotta make some time to hit a record store.

Don't get huffy. I think this album is a great step forward for bridging the gap between mainstream-ish and indie-ish (like Aceyalone and RJD2). Though I must admit I've always liked Ghostface best out of the Wu guys. "Cherchez La Ghost" is fucking crazy.

No huff, dude. Just sick of everything leading back to indie-talk with you. But now we're actually discussing the thread's topic, I'm with ya.
Ghost wasn't always my favorite. Meth and RZA had their moments, but each shot himself in the foot (repeatedly) while Ghost's work just kept getting better. The entire Supreme Clientele album was a classic... and when I heard tracks like "Beat the Clock" off The Pretty Toney Album, I damn-near crapped myself.

We never were off-topic. Indie heavyweights MF Doom and J Dilla produced most of the beats here. That's just a fact of the album in question.

I think merqury's just saying you're flogging a long-dead horse. It's like...enough with your indie supremacy, everyone gets it.

It just seems like you thrive on it. Move on, buddy.

And where would that leave U-God?

GZA lost me after Beneath the Surface. It was just an "okay" album. RZA? After The Digital Bullet, he's lucky he wasn't killed by angry fans.

Looks like you guys need to move on because I didn't say anything except who made the beats. Let it go.

says you, i guess you must be A "fairweather" fan...moving on and coming back whenever its essential for you.

anyways, i dont know why i am arguing, i have not liked any traditional rap for years.i will occasionally listen but rarely buy.

my opinion

rza = genious

you cant knock the guy for his last 2 or 3 efforts, when he has the historry like he does.

anyways, i guess i am aloyal fan.willing to roll with the ups and downs, always remembering the good songs and respecting the efort on the ones he missed on.

Wow. What's your problem? We don't have to agree, you know. That's the great thing about opinions.

RZA is indeed a genius. But can you honestly say he's the Wu-member bringing out the best material? No. So don't get all fanboy on me, dude.

this guy...

ha ha...fanboy, thats funny !
if you look back it says i dont buy rap anymore.

there isnt any wu members bringing out anything substantial, i dont consider ghostface a wu member anymore really...especially this album.it has little to nothing in affiliation to wu.

I agree that Ghost's sound has kinda strayed from the Wu arena, but I don't think that's such a bad thing. When RZA was producing the bulk of their output, he was stretched pretty thin.

Plus, I think the "Wu sound" in general is not nearly as bad as everyone makes it seem. I thought The W was a solid album. The only problem is that people seem to want 36 Chambers reproduced on each release. For instance, I never quite got the outrage expressed over Forever. I thought that was a pretty good album too.

...but this thread is about Ghostface, so I'll say no more on that front.

1. Madlib doesn't have any beats on this album

2. The best beats are produced by Pete Rock, Just Blaze, and Dilla

3. Beneath The Surface and Legend Of The Liquid Sword are dope

4. How can you say Wu members aren't dropping anything substantial anymore? Pretty Toney, No Said Date, Fishscale, Grandmasters...come on. The Wu is the best thing in hip-hop right now.
