how can anyone seriously say lil wayne is great right now? he was ok, carter 1. he was a bit better carter 2. everything i hear him on nowadays is wweeeeaaaakk. his drawl compliments the beats well, but its candy ass lyrics. oh you ballin? you got whip and gats? who doesnt anymore. weak content is not replaceable with catchy delivery. i notice people rarely mention southern rappers when they name the top emcees. i can see why. if Andre 3000 and Ludacris dont get fools biggin em up like theyre the best, theres NO way wayne should be mentioned. and jay would tear him up.
id say the 5 best, in terms of style, content, wit, and versatility:
(in no order) Big L Technique KRS one Canibus Nas
but damn... theres so many out there. anyone here like edan?

While i respect peoples opinions i dont get how anyone can name camron, young jezzy, or honestly wezzy F in this discussion. Honestly i look at Scarface and Tupac. Scarface is a sort of un sung legend, and, atleast to me, probably was the most realistic gangsta rapper. Tupac seems to un aprreciated on this list, the guy had such deep songs and was such a complex person that it showed on his songs. But just for fun ill list the guys that i think are the best RIGHT NOW, breathing gets to complex.
Talib Kwali is amazing to me MF Doom has a huge fan base outside of the white nerdy guys, but the reason he makes this list is that sick beats mixed with the complex lyrics, its a rare combination. Andre 3000 won me over as a i used to like big boi more, but andre 3000 is just so damn good.
And just a side note if eminem had just done slim shady LP and then died he would be my hands down GOAT. His lyrics is songs like Role Model and Still dont give a fuck were masterful. But he catches hate for his skin, i mean it outshined Jay so badly on Renegades that i have a prblm saying that Jay Z is the best of all time. Nas's Illmatic puts him in the conversation but i dont think theirs enough else there.
But the man who had more impact then any other artist ever wasnt even named on this forum. Dr. Dre was a cornerstone of NWA, you might of heard of um, then went to deathrow where he produced amazing albums like tupacs All Eyes on Me. Then built Aftermath which ruled the rap game at the beggining of the millenium. The dude made Eminem made 50 cent, thats why when he stepped off and took his hands off 50 got lost and his grip fell of the game. O ya he also did The Chronic and the The Chronic 2001, the album that made me love rap. A lyricist, not even close but you can make the arguement for him cause honestly, define rapper.
haha yeah. i didnt put doom and em on my list cause you nailed the explanation. doom is brilliant as a producer, if you havent pored through all the special herbs vols, do so.
damn. i just read your last paragraph. dr. dre was the first CD i copped, the chronic, it blew me away at the time. i was 9. now if i listen, ie heard every song on there like 500 times, it sounds primitive, but it always has the 'classic' feel old good hip hop has. it killed it when i heard he had ghost writers. i heard MF Grimm did some...anyone know?
we got real close tastes (except kweli)). what else you into?
the best rapper alive is lil wayne he has some of the best punchlines and incredible flow. the only only person that comes close to him is luda although he maybe under the radar because hes not int all of that gangsta diss shit like 50,fat joe,jay-z guys are he prefers to just make good music which is what rap should be about.

I've seen tons of these on different forums and the main problem with all of them is that nobody uses clear-cut criteria. When people make their lists and debate them, they're all using different criteria with different weights. If you want to be objective about it, you have to use a set criteria like this:
1. Wordplay, metaphors, similes, wit 2. Lyrical structure & complexity 3. Flow (If I feel like it's just some guy yelling at me, it sucks) 4. Lyrical content, meaning, deepness 5. Originality (of lyrics or flow) 6. Overall sound (does it move heads?) 7. Optional, less-important factors (swag, appeal, influence, etc.)
Someone like weezy is amazing at 1, mediocre at 2, great at 3, terrible at 4, pretty good at 5, and good at 6.
Someone like MF Doom is good at 1, 2, 4 and 5, but sucks at 3, 6 and 7.
Best rapper alive should have high marks in all categories. Using different weights leads to different results. I look for good sound, flow, content and lyrical wit/complexity. Here are my contenders, no order, only weaknesses discussed.
Nas. Not as lyrically complex as underground. Doesn't ever get innovative with his flow.
Royce 5'9". Solid all-around, but needs something amazing. Too many generic songs in his catalog.
Andre 3000. Amazing on all counts but he's never released a solid set of songs that deserve best alive status.
Lupe. Not as lyrically complex as underground.
T.I. Same as Lupe and a lot less deep, but for some reason I see potential.
Can't put guys like Common on my list cuz they just don't blow me away with their sound and flow. Sound and flow trump endless Canibus rhymes at the end of the day. This is best rapper not best lyricist!
Doesn't the producer have more control over this? Of course good rappers aren't going to shine over limp beats, but I dunno exactly what you're talking about here.

He's close, but I think he wouldn't make it on mine either...
My Favorite MCs 1. Raekwon 2. MF DOOM 3. Kool Keith 4. Ghostface Killah 5. Plug-1
Most rappers who claim themselves to be the best rappers alive are bullshit, but one just happens to be right. Lil' Wayne aka Weezy aka Dwayne Michael Carter is (in my opinion) the best rapper alive for many reasons.
One; he collaberates with other musicians that aren't just rappers. He can add a creative melodical spin to any of his rap songs. A tune is important in a good rap song to keep it flowing, and Weezy always has it.
Two: His lyrics/rhymes are some of the best anywhere. What he raps about in some of his songs is real, he deals with issues like Hurricane Katrina, and our neglecting president.
He has the voice, the flow, the creativity, and the heart to be the best rapper ever. And he is
I like Lil Wayne as much as the next person-- hell, I've been following him since I was a child (as was he)-- but I can at least acknowledge that Weezy is nowhere near the best rapper alive. He'd be in my top 5 favorite rappers (if I could put Wu-Tang as one haha) but he's more creative with his lyrics than he is... intelligent with his lyrics.
And it's fairly common to collab with other musicians who are not rappers (Wu-Tang's "Heart Gently Weeps" is a collab with Erykah Badu, John Frusciante, and Dhani Harrison... all-star cast, ey?). Also, many non-mainstream rappers focus almost exclusively on political and societal issues.
Chances are this is the only post you will ever make though, so whatever.
i like to think that aesop rock is the greatest, but noone can keep up with/make sense of what he's saying enough to know except for fellow supergeniuses like john darnielle. so ok, not true, but he's better than weezy if you aks me.

I don't know how this is a contest. Jay-z DID have flow and DID have talent but from what I've seen he hasn't put anything out worthwhile since the blueprint. Now for the cats who can actually flow. Talib, Common, and Mos Def can spit but the true "best rapper's alive" isn't one guy, its Jurassic 5. NO DOUBT. They are the BEST ever not just the best alive. Their flow, their wordplay and their respect for the art is unmatched, now or ever. They understand that rap and hiphop are an artform and not just an excuse to be a thug. You can disagree but you cannot talk smack about J5, you know they are unmatched in todays hiphop world.

Actually, the best rapper alive as the title of the thread suggests is quite specifically, and by definition, one guy. I'm sure if you really forced yourself, under threat of being raped by an angry baboon, you could pick a favourite from J5, no?

That's creepy... do you employ some kind of mind-probe to extract thoughts from peoples brains? I do like them, as it happens.
