OK, OK, so generally I don't click with hip-hop due to the lyrics. (It's one of the few genres where lyrics are the most important thing to me.) But I just love k-os's new CD, it's sort of this year's St. Elsewhere. Though k-os doesn't sing as well as Cee-Lo, his combination of rock, soul, R&B, reggae and hip-hop, along with lyrics that aren't shameful exhibitions of misogyny or materialism, is winning. He has a good singing voice, though his rapping isn't too impressive, and his production is top-notch. This is a beautiful little alternative hip-hop album that will probably appeal less to fans of indie than it will to those enjoying hardcore rap. It's a sunny, upbeat but never fake-sounding record, and one of the year's best.
9/10
