I'm new to this forum so thought this would be a good way to say hi. I caught a complete performance of Grisey's Les Espaces Acoustiques last night and a friend and I were talking afterward about whether or not it can be considered "expressive, emotional" music. The piece is kind of the archetype for spectral music, all based on the physics of sound. We agreed that the ending is really powerful, but couldn't figure out whether or not Grisey should get really credit for its composition. Of course the performance wouldn't have happened without his score, but does it really qualify as an artistic expression? I suppose this could open up a lot of other questions, but just wanted to see what people have to say.
