The movie’s not out so I haven’t heard anything yet but I am intrigued.

I had been wondering aloud over in the best of 2007 thread whether any soundtracks would make best album lists. I find it kinda odd that soundtracks seem to have disappeared from critical consensus. Anyhoo, I'm very keen to hear Greenwood's new film score. Perhaps it will end up in some later lists?

it is rare to see classical music cross over into the popular music scene, especially when it comes to such things as end of the year lists. there are many reasons for this (which i won't go into), but greenwood will not change this. from what i have heard of the score, it is eery contemporary classical - not exactly something that most indie music fans would dig, let alone understand. as far as soundtracks go, i would think the "once" soundtrack would get more recognition than the greenwood soundtrack as far as year end lists are concerned.

quote: Originally posted by TheNewBeat: I got to see the London Contemporary Orchestra do Popcorn Superhet Receiver last Friday, and it was just killer. It raises another interesting sort of question though. A lot of that piece is written in a style that was really big in the 60's, and a few people have faulted it for that, but it was a sold-out show, with a lot of people who wouldn't normally attend that sort of concert. And from the audience reaction, I think they really liked the other pieces on the program, which included some Messiaen and Xenakis. So I think it's a good thing to have a high profile guy like Greenwood writing new music- even if it's in what's been called an outdated style- if it brings some more attention to this extremely rich yet hardly known form of art. Thoughts?
I think you're exactly right about it being a good thing for Greenwood to bring more attention to the genre... to expose some new people to it. I look forward to more of his work in the future. AS a side note: over the summer I was back in Colorado driving through the mountains and listened to both Bodysong and There will Be Blood. for some reason I can't quite articulate, the music goes perfectly with the mountains. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
