One of my favorite Romantic composers, Franz Schubert is best known for his maturation and expansion of the art song (lied.) There are quite a number of his works that I thoroughly enjoy. Although not distinguished by his symphonies, some are simply beautiful. I own his
Symphony No. 8 in Bm ("Unfinished") and
Symphony No. 9 in CM ("The Great") on vinyl and both are superb listens. I absolutely love the "Trout Quintet" which included his
Piano Quintet in A, Op. 114 and any of his piano sonatas are also great.
As for his art songs, there is the beloved and most well-known work of his,
Erlkönig ("Wer reitet so spät") along with
Ellens Gesang III ("Ave Maria")—the latter known for its use in
Fantasia. Some other greats include the beautiful
Heidenröslein ("Sah ein Knab..."),
Die Forelle ("In einem Bächlein helle") which became the basis for his "Trout Quintet," and
Der Musensohn ("Durch Feld und Wald zu schweifen"). He is one of my favorite composers, too bad he only lived to be 31.
