I was thinking of making a special 'top' list of best songs that I really like, but on albums I'd hardly ever listen to in their entirety. So, I thought people sharing those lists would make an interesting discussion topic.

Here's what I can come up with quickly.

British Sea Power - Please Stand Up*
Bright Eyes - Landlocked Blues*
Stephen Malkmus - Baby Cmon*

Love as Laughter - Dirty Lives
The Hold Steady - Your Little Hoodrat Friend
Raveonettes - Pretty In Black
Caribou - (I THINK the track is, but it might also be track 2) Yeti
Boy Least Likely To - Be Careful With Me
Oneida - Run Through My Hair
Josh Rouse - Winter in the Hamptons
Akron/Family - Running, Returning
Edan - I See Colours

I am confused you gave edan like an 8/10 review and now u have it on a list of albums that u dont like as a whole? If you didnt like it shouldnt it be lower on the scale.Or where you just givint it a higher review because nearly every other ritic on earth has, or you where trying to achieve some diversity in your choices of music to listen to and post about on your bloggy thing??

And you dont like Caribou?
Are you not feeling well today?

It's simpler than that Imprezu.

I like most of the songs taken individually, but they wear on me as a whole because the vocals are so homogeneous. If I were to rate it now it'd be down to 7 or 7.5 or so.

Caribou has a few beautiful songs but is on the whole underwhelming as a production.

What is homogeneous mean in relation to music??

dictionary.com says: Uniform in structure or composition throughout.

Thats the only one that made sense to me.

If you listen to the tracks he usually raps with a theme in mind.

Caribou is awesome IMO.

I'm sure I could find some songs from the Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, and eels records that I like alot but I shy away from playing the whole disc(s). I need to look at track listings, though.

I'm a big fan of that British Sea Power disc...I think I like "Please Stand Up" even more in the context of listening to the whole disc (it's a great midpoint song, an oft-neglected part of any record), but it's also great as a stand along single. Same thing with the Rouse...I like the songs individually, but I really like playing the album as a whole.

I would have put songs from the Bloc Party record on that list a few months ago, but I've come to really enjoy the whole damn thing. I'm not sure how it sneaked into my subconscious, but it did.

Kings of Leon's "The Bucket" is a prime example of this. I think it's one of my favorite tracks this year, however that album is extremely average at best.

I have to disagree on that one. The Clap your Hands Say Yeah disc is packed with great songs, and a strong contender for album of the year. I even like the weird intro song that sounds like it was an outtake from Tom Waits'"The Black Rider".

Well, I've listened to some Tom Waits and I can't stand his stuff either. Just one of those things I don't get I'm afraid.

Hmm...it's probably best not to question people's selections of 'albums they don't like' in this thread, as it's not the real point of the thread. Just, I usually think of music in terms of albums, and singles on albums I don't like make me think differently.

I'm officially ready to add "Casimir Pulaski Day" to this list. I know the majority of folks here in the Forums are very fond of Sufjan's Illinois, but I find it not so exciting. "Casimir Pulaski Day" is a great song, though. I have to say that I find Illinois to be an album that I really don't like as a whole.

I'm offically a fan of 'Illinois'. It's ambitious and utterly engaging - more so than 'Michigan', which I found to be a little indulgent.

Sufjan Stevens is doing something that no one else is doing - it's totally original and pure. A rare feat these days.

My favourite tunes of 2005 are ...

'Over and Over Again' - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (I haven't even heard the album - it's not for sale yet here in Canada - but this tune is streaming at their site and it kills)
'Decatur' - Sufjan Stevens (amazing harmony vocals)
'Banquet' - Bloc Party
'1 Thing' - Amerie (not a fan of this genre, but this tune is awesome)

By the way, what is it with the Decemberists? I'm not knocking them, but someone please let me in on the appeal.

I think I'll add Royksopp - Only This Moment to the list.

I think it's a really great song, but most of the album is so dreary...

The CYHSY album has probably a half a dozen or more tunes that are as good or better than "Over and Over Again". It's probably one of my favorite releases this year (Take that Sufjan Stevens!).

I agree with you on the Decemberists. I've given them so many chances, but I've never found them to be any better than mediocre. I know a lot of people in here really like them, I just don't see it.

I actually didn't care for Illinois that much (give me Seven Swans over it ANY DAY!!!), but I have to admit, the first song is simply gorgeous and it doesn't fall underneath the weight of Sufjan's sometimes suffocating preciousness. There's just something about Illinois.

"Modern World" off the new Wolf Parade album is a really good song, but the album as a whole gets tiring.

This is the perfect category under which to place The Go! Team. "Bottle Rocket" and "Huddle Formation" were two of my favorite songs of 2004, and I still find myself listening to them quite frequently. However, I CANNOT STAND their album as a whole. There are far too many instrumental tracks that are really pretty boring, and the album just gets tiresome after a while. Actually, after a very short while.

Daft Punk's brilliant "Robot Rock" on the otherwise achingly average new album "Human After All"

Good call. I was also disappointed by their album, but I like that track. Other candidates are;
Bloc Party - Banquet
30 Seconds To Mars - Battle of One
Weezer - Haunt You Every Day: Not even this song is anything spectacular, but this disappointed me more than any other release this year. It certainly isn't the worst cd I've heard this year (that would go to Transplants - Haunted Cities and runner up Limp Bizkit), but as a long time fan I cannot STAND this cd as a whole.
and I did really like that aforementioned Amerie song as well (also not usually my cup of tea musically).
