Like five people in Fiery's thread want this thread to exist. It's turning into an 'Everybody, somebody, nobody, anybody' deal. Soo...here it is.
This year what I basically did was, anything that got really good reviews I tried to find samples for, and if those samples impressed me, buy the album. So if there's a critically acclaimed album I don't have, it's because I didn't like the samples enough. (Not to say the album isn't good, just it didn't get through my filter by convincing me well enough that it was good). That or it's a live album.

Isolee - Wearemonster Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - s/t The Earlies - These Were the Earlies Buck 65 - This Right Here is BUck 65 Books - Lost and Safe
I also didn't pick up that Kraftwerk thing.

Wouldn't it be more fun to do "Critically acclaimed stuff you heard and hated in 2005"? Otherwise, it'll just be people posting similar lists and someone replying, "You're crazy!! How could you not have heard _____?!"
I agree with Dubs. There's plenty of albums I haven't heard in their entirety (like Kraftwerk or System of a Down) simply because their not my taste. It's far more interesting when you have an album that you listened to, gave it a fair shot, but still weren't impressed by.
Example:
Steven Malkmus - Face the Truth. By all accounts, I should like this album. Pavement is one of my all time favorite bands, but I haven't been terribly wowed by Malkmus' solo work. Supposedly this album was supposed to be a return to form for him, but other than "Baby C'Mon", I just didn't enjoy the songs as much as I enjoy his work in Pavement.

I agree with dubs and eric. I was one of those who called for a separate thread, but I wanted it to be a "critically acclaimed releases you didn't care for" sort of thing. I was actually planning to start it today, but maybe we should just re-name this one.

Critically acclaimed, didn't hear: Ocean's Apart - The Go-Betweens Takk... - Sigur Ros Cole's Corner - Richard Hawley Lost And Safe - The Books These Were The Earlies - The Earlies Beauty And The Beat - Edan Mezmerize - System Of A Down Wearemonster - Isolee Hypermagic Mountain - Lightning Bolt Chavez Ravine - Ry Cooder Lookaftering - Vashti Bunyan
Heard but didn't care for (note: I did actually like most of these CD's, I just felt they were overrated - none of them made my top 20, although a few were in my top 30): I Am A Bird Now - Antony And The Johnsons Arular - M.I.A. Mysterious Production Of Eggs - Andrew Bird Gimme Fiction - Spoon LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem s/t - Broken Social Scene Late Registration - Kanye West
Hmm..I was avoiding making it that, because I knew it'd just turn into a lot of people trashing other people's favorite bands. Very well.
Bought, didn't like: Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain LCD Soundsystem - s/t (I hated it at first, then liked it, now hate it again) Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
(One rule for this thread now that other people have changed it: No trashing other people's dislikes. That's just flamebait.)

I don't get it. Why bother posting lists of "critically acclaimed albums" you didn't like? Use the Who do you just not...get? or 2005 CD's Listened To But Didn't care for...or did! or Overrated and Underrated Artists threads. It seems like the only way music fans feel content to set themselves apart from their (very) like-minded peers is to trash a few albums and thereby prove you're not just like everyone else. This reads like an exercise in hipster self-loathing. Give it a rest already.

They could already do that looking at all the favorites list. Let's just hope people respectfully disagree... Some of the albums I listened to at least a couple times and didn't really like:
Lightning Bolt - "Hypermagic Mountain" I tried. I really did. My Morning Jacket - "Z" This one just never hooked me. Fiona Apple - "Extraordinary Machine" I still love her voice, but it wasn't enough this time. Hold Steady - "Separation Sunday" For me, this one actually got a little worse each time I listened to it. Deerhoof - "The Runners Four" I'm sorry, Satomi's voice just kills me. I've given it many chances and it just doesn't work.

Considering everything you get, I'm thinking you need to get some better samples, or just go ahead and get the thing. Hell, if you PM me, I'll send it to you. I can't for the life of me see how somebody who loves Wolf Parade wouldn't feel the same way about CYHSY. There are just too many great songs on the sucka.
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

Heh, I gave CYHSY a very, very long chance. I had like three tracks that I listened to like ten times each, trying to force myself to get into it. I didn't think it was *bad*, per se, it just didn't stand out to me.
I could go see if the album's on rhapsody or something so I can listen to all the tracks and give it another chance.

Well, leland, some people set themselves apart by trashing albums most people like, and some people do it by trashing thread concepts without contributing anything to the thread. To each his own, eh?

Well, I also didn't care for CYHSY that much either. "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth," however, is wonderful. The guy's voice just REALLY drives me crazy.

My thoughts exactly.

I'll second everyone who said The Hold Steady, although I don't hate them. And I can tolerate a bad voice (CYHSY is definitely top 10 for me) but I cannot deal with Deerhoof. I think they're unlistenable and they're my main problem with Pitchfork, especially Nick Sylvester. Also: "Wilderness" (the one by Wilderness, not Prewitt) features another deal-breaking voice. And I can't get through more than about two minutes of "Lost and Safe" by the Books. Maybe I just haven't gotten to the good part. Oh yeah and "Hypermagic Mountain." Awful. But if you like it, that's totally cool with me.
I actually enjoy the Hold Steady. They're probably my fave bar band of 2005, but the Queens of the Stone Age rock just as much and with more melody. I'm pretty sure neither will make my top 20, but QOTSA has a better chance, even if their latest album is kinda "lazy".
This thing about vocalists needs to be reconciled because all the initial Roxy Music albums had Bryan Ferry squawking (they are my fave band of the Pre-1977 70s, and who would've thought Ferry would become the ultimate crooner?), early Smiths had Morrissey bellowing and now he's considered a damn fine vocalist, and Talking Heads and Television's first albums had shitty singing!!! (at least the unenlightened thought so); it's almost amazing how half the shit singers nowadays "sound like David Byrne", a guy who practically turned into a soul singer.

...you forgot lazy, ugly and disrespectful....
point taken. But were all those critically acclaimed????
I'd like to spin something positive out of this: bands I HAVE NOT LISTENED TO, but want to check out in the new year (when I have time/money) because of the acclaim you guys set forth. They will miss my 2005 List, but I can't listen to everything...so things I'll give a go: Lightning Bolt Isolee The National Hold Steady My Morning Jacket (I'll give a second look at)
