September 13: Devendra Banhart (I haven't actually heard them)
Devendra Banhart's just one dude, Devendra Banhart. And speaking of Devendra Banhart, the new album is very very Beatle-like (not beatlesque).
1. The Cover is based on Sgt. Pepper 2. There's a song called "The Beatles" (which has the funniest first lines ever) 3. The Song "Heard Somebody Say" is very similar to "A Day In The Life"
lots of other things are very beatle like. I like it so far though.

I'm on the Menomena e-mail list, and in the update they just sent out it sounds like they'll have they're second album out by late fall. I guess they originally wrote the material from this album for a modern dance performance by some Portland dance group. They liked it so much that they spent the last year mixing and re-recording it. I'm pretty pumped about it because their debut was something original and impressive.
They're frontman (not sure of his name) also has a solo album coming out on September 19 under the name Lackthereof. They also said they should have the third Menomena album out by spring 2006. They keep busy I guess.

American Analog Set - Set Free Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase Depeche Mode - '06 Release System of a Down - Hypnotize Tool - new (double?) album in '06 My Morning Jacket - Z
There are *so many* notable indie bands releasing albums on September 13, if you look at the metacritic release calendar.
Devendra Banhart, which has already been mentined lately. I haven't heard him but from the buzz he seems worth looking into.
Iron & Wine & Calexico, Sigur Ros and Super Furry Animals, whose new albums are already very popular on metacritic.
Then...well, I don't know what Tracy Chapman has done since 1988, but if she got back to the level of her s/t album, that album could be great.
And, Bonnie Raitt and Paul McCartney...people who've released great stuff in the past but not too recently. But you never know of Raitt will come up with another 'Nick of Time'.
And these are all on the same day...
Then of course, two weeks after that...Wolf Parade who people on metacritic are eagerly awaiting..Big Star, Sheryl Crow, and Neil Young...
The week after that, Broken Social Scene, Fiona Apple, Franz Ferdinand, Liz Phair...
Talk about floogates. And then you keep looking forward and there's more interesting stuff. I still haven't heard if the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Primal Scream albums in the works will come out 2005, but there is a LOAD of good stuff ticketed for early 2006.
Shins, Flaming Lips, Strokes...

I'm happy, ecstatic even, to say I got promo copies of both, and both of them are superb. Especially Sigur Ros, man. I've been eagerly, eagerly awaiting that album for over a year. I'd recommend as Sigur Ros' "Milano" as the album's best track, and the best one to hear first. The song is ten minutes, but feels like four.
Or just d/l the whole thing. Whatever.

Add Grandaddy and the second Fiery Furnaces album to that list.
And on the topic of the Iron and Wine/Calexico EP, I've heard it and have mixed feelings. I understand that Beam is trying to diversify his sound, but it usually doesn't work as well as his slow, laid-back stuff. "Red Dust" does well with the added instrumentation. "He Lays In the Reigns" is all right until that awful opera singer comes in. That just about ruins the song for me. I like the slower version of "History of Lovers" much better than the faster, more upbeat version on the EP though. I think that's the perfect example of him trying to change his style and ruining a good song in the process. "16, Maybe Less" is fantastic though. One of the best Iron and Wine songs I've heard for sure. All in all, much better than the Woman King EP, but not as good as either of his full lengths.

Well Bob....she's done a lot. Her debut will never be topped and is one of a kind. But, if you are interested, check out Crossroads (89) and 2002's Let It Rain. There is one song on Let It Rain that has to be heard. Happy (track 9) I recommend it. Beautiful song that is just so soft and.. well, check it out. One of my fav songs of that year.

No Direction Home (New Bob Dylan) is ok. I don't think it's anywhere near the quality of bootleg series 1, 2 or any of the Live 1964,66,75 cd's. Of course all of those are amazing. Vol. 2 mostly just for "She's Your Lover Now."
When I was looking at the tracklisting before I had it I thought that it would be really interesting but for the most part it's just early takes of the classics. One song that is really great is the Newport Folk Festival version of Maggie's Farm. It almost sounds like the velvet underground circa white light/white heat. I can understand why folkies might have gotten mad. It wasn't just Dylan going electric. The booklet as always has really great pictures. If you just download the album you're not getting the full experience at all with this one.
On the Iron & Wine Calexico, some of the songs are amazing (history of lovers, route 41, 16 maybe less), the others aren't so memorable.

What's the slower version from?
It's from a collection of songs called 9-20-02, that never was released. It's easy to find on a file-sharing network. There are other songs on it that eventually wound up on some of his subsequent releases.

I love Kozelek and can't stand Modest Mouse. I'm on the fence, but given how he re-makes songs (see the AC/DC covers disc) makes me think I'll enjoy it...

Hmm, I can't find it on soulseek, my name is hellahella on there if you're on it. I can't share very much because i'm either at work, home (56k) or school where they limit my uploads.

I've been sitting on advances of the Big Star and Echo discs for several weeks now, and I can't say I'm completely unbiased because I absolutely LOVE me some Echo, but I think the new one is great. It's better than anything they've done since the classic "What Are You Going To Do With Your Life."
The new Big Star is, well, um...not so hot. I'm a HUGE Big Star fan, but I just don't find a lot to get excited about, even with Stringfellow and Auer on board. I am going to see them, provided the tour dates stick (given the fact that Chilton lost his home in the hurricane), but I'm not impressed with the new record at all.
