Wow!! You guys are ace! I regularly make two CDs for my mate who needs a little push in the right direction. One is rock (which includes the odd hip hop song) and the other is relax.

I will head home this weekend, and put together a "best of" my rock and relax comps. I wish I had the diversity as some of you guys - I would no doubt lilke to add a few of the songs you've mentioned here.....that being said, all the standards by this years big bands are already in there. Wait out for my humble inclusion.

OK, I've decided to make two mixtapes for 2005, one slower and sadder and the other more upbeat, rocking stuff. I did the slower one first. I spent a long time putting this one together, making sure the songs flowed well into each other and that there was a gradual flow between different types of songs. I didn't really even try to limit the number of songs from one artist, I just put whatever song I thought fit best into each slot. Here it is:

There's usually a little duplication of artists from CD to CD from albums I particularly like. There are also a handful of artists whose songs come from albums I didn't care for as a whole. I have a question. Why is a mixtape better than a cd? Is it for reasons of nastalga?

I know that many of these ARE CDs, not tapes. You'll have to ask the tapers if there's a reason for the term mix"tape". I can still make 'em, but I have to play them at my house, so I'll go for the CD to eliminate the dreaded tape hiss. Now, if I could only make a mixvinyl.

Don't we call them mixtapes just because the word "mixtape" sounds so much cooler than "mix CD?" I mean, just say it: "mixtape." It just sounds awesome. That's what I always figured, anyway. I mean, I don't even know how to make an actual mixtape, so my mixes are made for CD's.

What is the time difference between a tape and a CD, by the way? I don't even know which one is longer.

A CD can hold up to 80 minutes, while I've made tapes with 120 minutes (60 per side.)

Admit it, its because Cusack seemed so cool making his mix tapes in High Fidelity. We al wanted to be him.

On another note, is anyone leaving out what they consider to be a song in their top-5 of the year? Does a "mix tape of the year" have to include the years best songs? I would say no, but I doubt many people are eaving those songs off....with the exception on Linn who might have a jazz number as the best song.....

I've never seen High Fidelity.

I definitely left some a few of my favorite songs of the year off of my mixtapes. Some songs just don't fit well outside the context of their own album. A song like "It'5" by Architecture in Helsinki, for instance, is a song that I love but not one that I could fit on the mixtape.
