I send out a package of mix CDs to my friends back in the midwest each year with the Christmas cards. Tend to break them up a touch by genre and personal aesthetics. I like to include 2-3 tracks from each artists unless it's a great single from an album I otherwise woulnd't recommended. Still tweaking playlists, but songs under consideration for each mix CD are...

CD 1 - Indie Folk/Singer/Songwriter

Sufjan Stevens - Chicago, Casimir Pulaski, maybe Man of Metropolis.
Andrew Bird - Fake Palindromes, My Skin, Is, and Tables and Chairs.
Decemberists - Mariners Revenge Song and Eli, The Barrow Boy.
Ry Cooder - Muy Fifi and Closing Track.
Mountain Goats - This Year, Dino Lupati's Bones, Pale Green Things.
Bright Eyes - At the Bottom of Everything, Lua, Another Traveling Song
Bruce Springsteen - Devil's and Dust, Maria's Bed
Vashti Bunyan - Something if I grow to like any of the albums songs.

CD 2 - Pop

Stars - Your Ex-Lover is Dead.
Coldplay - To Kingdom Come.
The Go-Team - Panther Strike, We Just Won't Be Defeated.
Go Betweens - Finding You, No Reason to Cry
Decemberists - Sporting Life, 16 Military Wives, On The Bus Mall
Antony and the Johnson - Hope There's Someone, Fistful of Love, Spiralling.
Magic Numbers...Tracks 4 and 5.
Maybe a Clientele Track.

CD 3 Rock (60s/70s Vibe)
Sleater Kinney - What's Mine is Yours, Jumpers, Rollercoaster.
Okkervil River - For Real, Black, Latest Toughs.
White Stripes - Blue Orchid, As Ugly as I Seem, Take Take Take.
Low - Monkey, Silver Rider, Broadway
My Morning Jacket - Wordless Chorus, Gideon, Anytime.
Hold Steady's - Hoodrat Friend, Charlemagne in Sweatpants.
LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is Playing in My House, Losing My Edge.
Wilco - Ghost (Including a few 2004 tracks missed last year) At Least that's what you Said, Hell is Chrome, Theologians.
American Music Club - Patriot's Heart (My pick for single greatest song of last two years by any band), Ladies and Gentlemen, Home.
Elliot Smith - Fond Farewell to a Friend, Twilight.
Modest Mouse - Float On, Good Times are Killing Me.

CD 4 Rock with an 80s/90s Vibe...
Arcade Fire - Neighborhoods 1 & 3, Wake Up.
Wolf Parade - You are a Runner, Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts, I'll Say Anything, This Heart's on Fire.
CYHSY - Rust, War, Home on Ice.
Bloc Party - Banquet.
Green Day - Holiday, Jesus of Suburbia.
The Killers - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, All these things that I've done.
The Kills - No Wow, The Good Ones, Ticketman.
Earlies - Great song towards end, forget the name.
Franz Ferdinand - The Fallen

CD 5 Bizzarro - Ambient, Avante Garde, Expirimental, Obnoxious, Weird and just plain difficult.

Sigur Ros - Sigleour, Track 2 (Forgot Name)
Deerhoof - Running Thoughts, Track 10 (Forgot name)
Lightning Bolts - 1 sampler -Don't think it makes a difference.
Can Reissues - Mushroom, Hallelujah, Mary quite Contrary.
Engineers - Home, Come in Out of the Rain.
Brian Eno - This, Tracks 2 & 7
John Cale (From Hobosapiens) - Bicycle, Letters from Abroad, Caravan.

That's about it...Still working through New Kayne, Elbows, Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene, Xiu Xiu, Books, Fiona Apple, Earlies...but first listens on all of these haven't stirred me to adjust list much.

I just want to say that it's nice to see you back on the forums, Nojax, and that this is a great thread idea. Also, those are some really interesting mixes, Illiniq. I really like a lot of the songs you included.

I'll definitely make u pa list of my own and throw it in here soon.

Hey, thanks for knowing who I am !

unfortunately I have messed up something royal, my mixtape does not have "Artifact" by Ariel Pink on it

, which is like the best sad song in the world this year

so consider it the extra special bonus track

I've narrowed down my list of songs to use to 67. Now I've got to get to work on figuring out which songs go well next to each other and which songs just won't make the final cut. I think I may make it a double album.

Hard to Beat: Hard-Fi
Sin City: Limbeck
Sad Eyes: Josh Rouse
The Comeback: Shout Out Louds
Banquet: Bloc Party
Wordless Chorus: My Morning Jacket
I See You, You See Me: The Magic Numbers
Made for TV Movie: Clem Snide
Shadowland: Youth Group
I Predict A Riot: Kaiser Chiefs

Mix Two:
The Blue Light (Engineers Remix): Bloc Party
The Ocean: Richard Hawley
California Blue: The Orange Peels

Cash Machine: Hard-Fi
Thanks to the Girl: Ordinary Boys
Suck It Up: Adam Richman
Cigarettes: Greg Dulli
Devil's Waiting: BRMC
I'm Ready: Jack's Mannequin
It Ended on an Oily Stage: British Sea Power

I'm sure I've forgotten many. I tried to limit this to one song per band, but British Sea Power, Hard-Fi, and The Ordinary Boys have too many act tracks to pick just one...

Wow!! You guys are ace! I regularly make two CDs for my mate who needs a little push in the right direction. One is rock (which includes the odd hip hop song) and the other is relax.

I will head home this weekend, and put together a "best of" my rock and relax comps. I wish I had the diversity as some of you guys - I would no doubt lilke to add a few of the songs you've mentioned here.....that being said, all the standards by this years big bands are already in there. Wait out for my humble inclusion.

OK, I've decided to make two mixtapes for 2005, one slower and sadder and the other more upbeat, rocking stuff. I did the slower one first. I spent a long time putting this one together, making sure the songs flowed well into each other and that there was a gradual flow between different types of songs. I didn't really even try to limit the number of songs from one artist, I just put whatever song I thought fit best into each slot. Here it is:

1 – Season – Avatar
2 – Caribou – Pelican Narrows
3 – Thee More Shallows – Freshman Thesis
4 – Jose Gonzalez – Deadweight On Velveteen
5 – Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy Jr.
6 – Lawrence – Lost Images
7 – Eels – In the Yard Behind the Church
8 – Iron and Wine – Jezebel
9 – Espers – Rosemary Lane
10 – Magnolia Electric Co – Hammer Down
11 – Mountain Goats – Dinu Lipatti’s Bones
12 – Jose Gonzalez – Heartbeats
13 – Sun Kil Moon – Tiny Cities Made of Ashes
14 – Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day
15 – David Francey – Wishing Well
16 – Mountain Goats – Love Love Love
17 – Andrew Bird – Masterfade
18 – Eels – Bride of Theme From Blinking Lights
19 – Magnolia Electric Co – I Can Not Have Seen the Light
20 – Decemberists – Of Angels and Angles

There's usually a little duplication of artists from CD to CD from albums I particularly like. There are also a handful of artists whose songs come from albums I didn't care for as a whole. And finally, there's a fair amount of stuff I've not spent enough time with, so there's likely going to be a fourth in December or January.

Now Playing: "The Palladium" Lennie Bruce The Lennie Bruce Originals, Vol. 2

Rather remarkable to see how few of you put Sleater-Kinney songs onto your "mixtapes". Rather sad, actually.

I have a question. Why is a mixtape better than a cd? Is it for reasons of nastalga?

Well after reading through this thread I made my own 05 mix cd. It's only made up of four artists because I haven't listened to a lot of 05 albums. I am still rather pleased with it.

1. The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us - Sufjan Stevens
2. Window - Fiona Apple
3. Now That I Know - Devendra Banhart
4. Junior Kickstart - Emiliana Torrini
5. Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
6. O' Sailor - Fiona Apple
7. Everyone's a VIP to Someone - Emiliana Torrini
8. Queen Bee - Devendra Banhart
9. Ladyflash - Emiliana Torrini
10. The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts - Sufjan Stevens
11. Waltz (Better Than Fine) - Fiona Apple
12. Hey Mama Wolf - Devendra Banhart
13. Nothing Brings Me Down - Emiliana Torrini
14. Canela - Devendra Banhart
15. Extraordinary Machine - Fiona Apple
16. Long Haired Child - Devendra Banhart

I know that many of these ARE CDs, not tapes. You'll have to ask the tapers if there's a reason for the term mix"tape". I can still make 'em, but I have to play them at my house, so I'll go for the CD to eliminate the dreaded tape hiss. Now, if I could only make a mixvinyl. Cool

Don't we call them mixtapes just because the word "mixtape" sounds so much cooler than "mix CD?" I mean, just say it: "mixtape." It just sounds awesome. That's what I always figured, anyway. I mean, I don't even know how to make an actual mixtape, so my mixes are made for CD's.

What is the time difference between a tape and a CD, by the way? I don't even know which one is longer.

A CD can hold up to 80 minutes, while I've made tapes with 120 minutes (60 per side.)

Admit it, its because Cusack seemed so cool making his mix tapes in High Fidelity. We al wanted to be him.

On another note, is anyone leaving out what they consider to be a song in their top-5 of the year? Does a "mix tape of the year" have to include the years best songs? I would say no, but I doubt many people are eaving those songs off....with the exception on Linn who might have a jazz number as the best song.....

I've never seen High Fidelity.

I definitely left some a few of my favorite songs of the year off of my mixtapes. Some songs just don't fit well outside the context of their own album. A song like "It'5" by Architecture in Helsinki, for instance, is a song that I love but not one that I could fit on the mixtape.
