Natioal - Alligator

I never would've thought I'd really like this album, seeing how I listened to it over and over last year and never saw anything very good about it (aside from the brilliant closer "Mr. November"). Amazingly enough, though, I really like this record. It reminds me of that Onion story: "It Was That Seventh Subscription Renewal Card That Finally Convinced Me" or something like that. A top-20 2005 record for me now.

Two records in particular that I didn't pick up last year would've made my personal top 10 had I heard them.

They are The National's Alligator and the incredible Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats, both would've ended up challenging for top spot.

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

Like Alligator, though 2005 in retrospect was so strong and deep, I don't know if it breaks my top twenty...

But every time I listen to Sunset Tree or Blinking Lights, they move up a notch...it's not so much the music but the incredibly emotional clarity to the narratives of the albums. I think I had Tree 5 or 6 at Year's end, After The Woods, Black Sheep Boy, Z, and Illinois, but it has definitely moved ahead of Z and Illinois for me. Eels are still holding down the 6th spot.

While on topic, I have to say another 2005 release I've come to Love is the Jens Lenkman compilation...He's just got a great dry sense of humor.

Jens Lekman's CD was awesome, I totally forgot about that one thanks for reminding me!

The Drones - Wait Long By The River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By

would have been somewhere in the top of my best of 2005 if I had discovered it in time.

Matt Sweeny & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - '"Superwolf"
Great album. This certainly would have been in my top ten or so last year.

Yeah, I agree with Joji. Superwolf was way better than I expected based on reviews. I almost bought it at Borders, but went for "Multiply" by Jamie Lidell instead.

But...I really don't feel like changing my list anymore.

I bought my copy at Borders Eeker!
I have another!
Emperor X- Central Hug/Friendarmy/Fractaldunes
I had one song form this album for forever, then finally got the rest of the album yesterday. It's a real consistent, enjoyable pop album. Reminds me a lot of Why?
