Personally, I don't dig the voice or the musical stylings. Faux gospel-soul is not a bag I dig.

Same here. I've never liked soul/gospel music.

I'm really liking Motion City Soundtrack-Commit This To Memory

I didn't care for the Hold Steady-Separation Sunday.

For the most part, though, a major disappointment.

I've found out that the tunes translate great to a live setting.

I like "Apologies to the Queen Mary," but I don't understand the passionate support for the album. Wolf Parade sounds a lot like The Arcade Fire to me, and I felt the same way about "Funeral." I appreciate the album -- its independent spirit, etc. -- more than I like it.

This seems like it's way off the mark to me. How is Antony's music like gospel, of all things? Where are the massed backing vocals? Where are any backing vocals? I think the hackneyed meme of "cabaret-pop" fits Antony far, far better than your signifiers here.

A guy I coached in middle school track last year let me borrow his copy of the new Oasis, and I kinda like it. It's the first I've heard of their stuff.

I really can't stand Josh Rouse's Nashville. All very clean and expertly done, but lacking any kind of spirit or emotion.

OK, I'm just listening to the new Fiery Furnaces album, and it is making me ill. There is no way my stomach can handle listening to this whole album. This is the most atrocious thing I've heard all year and quite possibly, ever. Unspeakably, abysmally, inexpressibly atrocious. And this is coming from someone whose favorite album from 2004 was Blueberry Boat. To think that I almost pre-ordered this album! Unbelievable.

Mostly the album consists of seemingly random and annoying, repetitive background instrumental parts with their grandma talking. Their grandma's slightly masculine voice is not pleasant. Occasionally, Eleanor sings/talks. There are no good melodies. There are no good stories. There is no good music. I bet the album art sucks too. End rant.

I'm not a big gospel listener, but I know I've heard my fair share of non-massed vox in gospel music. For some reason it really makes me think of the Make Up records, which I hated. But your description is probably more apt, which leads to a bigger question: given that I like 'cabaret-pop' considerably more than gospel (I've got Mark Almond records in my collection!), shouldn't I like this more than I do? I think it's the voice.

Wow. Imagine what it might do to an FF-hater like myself.

Prediction: Rob Mitchum gives it a 9.9 — or a 0.0 to get him his cred back after that fanboy rant about EP.

Supposedly, they've got two albums coming out this fall. The grandma thing, and a normal (well normal for them) one. I think the grandma thing was intended to be more of an experimental departure, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's not well received.

I think the second album's been pushed back to early 2006. I forget what its title is, but I think one of them described it as "shiny, pop songs" or something like that. Sounds more promising than that steaming pile they did with their grandma.

I agree that the second one sounds a lot better, and I'll probably forego the Grandma album. I thought some of "EP" was very accessible, so I'm eager to see if they indeed continue that trend and put out a really poppy album in a few months.

Fair enough. I would maintain that there's no gospel in this "gospel music."

It might be. My eyes boggled and I incoherently sputtered when someone first said to me that they didn't like Antony's voice, but I've mostly gotten used to the fact that some people just don't like it now. It's actually a little weaker live, so if you were planning to convince yourself through that venue, don't.

It's good to see some of the love for the Furnaces is dying. I was never a very big fan myself.

I love the Fiery Furnaces and all this hate is completely unwarranted.

There, I said it!
