Thanks, Raving. Your post reminded me of a few other individual, standout tracks this year. I like "This Year," by the Mountain Goats, but the songs on that album I keep replaying are "Dance Music" and "Lion's Teeth." Both are outstanding, and listing to them one-after-the-other forms a powerful story about child abuse. Also, "Silver Rider," from Low's "The Great Destroyer," has such great, lush harmony, it sounds like their voices are rushing up toward Heaven. Also, "Amazon" by M.I.A. has a kinetic energy to it that's really special. It's got great beats, an edgy, revolutionary theme (an updated Patty Hearst story) and sultry vocals. Special song and album. Iron & Wine's "Jezebel," is also a terrific song. It's where his old, acoustic/gothic Southern sound meets his new, revved-up sensibilities. And Antony & The Johnsons' "Fist of Love" is a great song that I've effusively praised elsewhere in these discussion forums. Oh, yeah: "Helicopter" and "Like Eating Glass," from Bloc Party's album, "Silent Alarm," are some of the best rock singles this year. Jagged, edgy tracks. The rest of the album (other than "Banquet") is so-so.

There is a short discussion between a few of us about how great this song is on page four of this thread. It still might be my favorite track of the year.

okay, as stated in new purchases, for this moment the best track is ... The New Pornographers 'The Bleeding Heart Show' just barely over 'The Jessica Numbers'.... ...tomorrow it may be the other way around...

Has anyone heard the new song, "Oceans," by Richard Hawley? I've never heard of him before, but I was really impressed by the song's lush arrangement and sad, contemplative lyrics. I haven't heard it enough to say it's one of my favorites tracks of the year, but it may get to that point. It's worth checking out (the song, and samples of other song's on Hawley's album, "Cole's Corner," are available on the artist's web site).

Oh man.... I'll try to limit this to one song per artist, though some of the albums (notably M.I.A., New Pornographers, and Cyne) are incredible from start to finish. In no particular order, though the top few are certainly more played than some of the others. "Polkamatic" ~ Vitalic "Glósóli" ~ Sigur Rós "Smile Around the Face" ~ Four Tet "$10" ~ M.I.A. "Arrow of God" ~ Cyne "Siriustar" ~ Deerhoof "Jackie, Dressed in Cobras" ~ New Pornographers "Concerning the UFO Sighting..." ~ Sufjan Stevens "I Turn My Camera On" ~ Spoon "Jumpers" ~ Sleater-Kinney "Gold Mine Gutted" ~ Bright Eyes "A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head..." ~ Andrew Bird "Beautiful Day Without You" ~ Röyksopp "Multiply" ~ Jamie Lidell "If Not Now, Whenever" ~ The Books "Banquet" ~ Bloc Party "Your Hands" ~ Wilderness "Broken Drum (Boards of Canada Remix) ~ Beck "Sweet Spots" ~ The Fiery Furnaces "Feel It In the Air" ~ Beanie Sigel w/ Melissa "The Stubborn Horse" ~ Mahjongg "1994" ~ Quasimoto "Hate It Or Love It" ~ The Game "My Lady Story" ~ Antony and the Johnsons "Will You Smile Again for Me?" ~ ...Trail of Dead Phew! And I have to admit, "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson is pretty damn good too. I can't believe I think so, but I do. I'm through denying it.

quote: Sufjan Stevens - "the Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us!" There's been a lot of talk about Illinois but I don't think anyone has mentioned this song. Rob Sheffield brought it up in his review (which was actually pretty good) for Rolling Stone. I think it feautures one of Stevens' best melodies and it's a pretty amazing vocal performance as well. Plus the arrangement combines his bare acoustic stuff with his more orchestrated, fleshed out material. And c'mon, "I can't explain the state that I'm in/ The state of my heart/ He was my best friend" --It's a little cheesy, but it gets me every time.
It would've been among the best closers of '05 if Stevens knew when to stop.

Right off the top of my head, here are the songs of 2005 that I have responded to the most, in no particular order:
Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens Your Ex-Lover Is Dead - Stars A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left - Andrew Bird The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah You Are A Runner and I Am My Father's Son - Wolf Parade Abel - The National Entertain - Sleater-Kinney Heard 'Em Say - Kanye West Du Ar For Fin For Mig (sp?) - Dungen Fistful of Love - Antony and the Johnsons Let It Die - Feist The Bleeding Heart Show - The New Pornographers Dance Music - The Mountain Goats Like Eating Glass - Bloc Party Saeglopur (sp?) - Sigur Ros (Note: If you get the chance, see them live! Do whatever you have to do to get there!)
And the best pop single of 2005 is...
"Since You've Been Gone" by...Ted Leo?
Yes, Leo's version is him on an acoustic guitar and is just about brilliant. Listen to the "double bridge", you'll see what I mean.
