Just started catching up for 2005, but what's hit me so far.
"Jumpers, Entertain, Rollercoaster" from SK's The Woods. But singling out a song with this album is pointless...it's a continuum type album in the same manner as Astral Weeks, What's Going on, or OK Computer, best appreciated when listened to straight through.
"16 Military Wives" Decemberists - Insanely catchy. Also a big fan of "Bus Mall" and "The Sporting Life"
"For Real" and "Black" from Okkervil River - Though have to say rest of album is a real tough sell for me, in same way I've always liked Wilco's uptempo numbers, but found many of Tweedy's darker efforts turgid and monotone, no matter how strikingly personal. As a whole, other than these two songs, from a purely musical perspective..ie ignoring lyrics, which are given to much weight in the assessment of a song by most critics...this album's a flat, bland affair.
"Home" Engineers.
"This" Brian Eno.
"Sweet Little Thing" Eels.
"Sweet Cloud" The Kills.
"Lua" Bright Eyes. Though must say not even in same league as American Music Clubs "Patriot's Heart" from 2004 though it walks very similar lyrical ground.
I Turn My Camera On - Spoon Banquet - Bloc Party Lua - Bright Eyes Mama - Stephen Malkmus Boundary Riders - The Go-Betweens It Ended On An Oily Stage - British Sea Power Emily Kane - Art Brut

I totally agree. This song is extremely addictive.Very Good!!
The album is ho-hum...with a few bangers, including this one.

I'm not crazy about Gimme Fiction (or Kill the Moonlight for that matter), but Spoon definitely has some gems. Probably my favorite song from Gimme Fiction is "Was It You?" It's an understated, but impeccable song. "They Never Got You" is similarly great.

I had sort of written off the new Fruit Bats album until I heard 'Canyon Girl' on the radio the other day. One of the best summer songs I've heard this year.
the first and best track of 05 that left me completely sppechless, that found myself roving from friend to friend and shaking them by the collar and going "holy fckn crap! listen!"
well not really, but i was at a loss at exactly what to do with something so insanely good.
I'm revising my earlier list to the 10 best tracks (IMHO) of the year as of today
1. Wolf Parade - Shine a Light 2. The National - Abel 3. The Game - Hate it or Love it 4. Kings of Leon - The Bucket 5. Bloc Party - Banquet 6. Spoon - I Turn My Camera On 7. Bright Eyes - Landlocked Blues 8. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! - The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth 9. Sleater-Kinney - The Fox 10. Fiery Furnaces - Evergreen

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this song yet, but I can't say enough about "Casimir Pulaski Day," from Sufjan Stevens' "Illinoise." The music is delicate, swirling and haunting, with little flourishes that highlight -- never distract from -- the heartbreaking, stunning lyrics. To summarize, the song is about the protagonist's first love from school, who has contracted cancer and is dying in front of his eyes. But the bueaty of the story is in the telling. Consider the evocative lyrics:
"Goldenrod and the 4 -- H stone, the things I brought you when I found out you had cancer of the bone."
"Tuesday night in Bible study, we lift our hands to pray over your body, but nothing ever happens."
"All the glory that the Lord has made, and the complications you could do without, when I kissed you on the mouth."
"In the morning, when you finally go, when the nurse runs in, with her head hung low, and the cardinal hits the window."
That's just pieces of the song lyrics. Stevens' lyrics have resonated strongly with me before, especially on "Romulus" and "The Upper Penninsula," both from Michigan. But this is altogether different. I actually agree with what I've read in some of the posts floating around these discussion boards, that overall, "Illinoise" is weaker than "Michigan," less lyrically coherent and so forth. But this one song is special. To me, it's the song of the year, and a coming-out event for one of the best new artists around. It's that good.
Honorable mention for Song of the Year for me include "I Summon You" by Spoon, "Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood," by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and -- I'm just being honest -- "Chewing Gum," by Annie.
I like ranking albums, but ranking songs is near impossible, so I'll just list some of my favorites from this year in no particular order:
Thee More Shallows - Freshman Thesis Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day, Man of Metropolis Mountain Goats - This Year Out Hud - The Song So Good They Named It Thrice* David Francey - Ankle Tattoo Four Tet - Sleep Eat Food Have Visions Decemberists - 16 Military Wives** Andrew Bird - Masterfade Okkervil River - For Real, Black Greg Weeks - Dusted Beck - Girl, Farewell Ride Spoon - Was It You Eels - Understanding Salesman Fiery Furnaces - Evergreen, Sullivan's Social Club Architecture In Helsinki - It'5 Iron and Wine - Jezebel, 16 Maybe Less
*Signifies best song title of the year. **Signifies the anti-war song of the year.
