Architecture In Helsinki - "Wishbone"

Uncharacteristically upbeat with really really really really REALLY REALLY cute female vocals. Then, violins come in, and my brain is trying to bust out of my ears to get closer to the music. Then it all falls apart in a cascade of harp and synth strings, only to be resurrected with a breakbeat and a peppy guitar solo. Vocals make a quick return, and then the song drifts out on a bed of violin, guitar, and "ba-ba-ba"s. And there's a bunch of stuff going on that I didn't mention. All in 2:26.

Hmm I would say from what I've heard so far...

Josh R. "It's the Nighttime"
Bright Eyes "At the Bottom of everything"
LCD Soundsystem "Daft Punk is Playing at My House"
Anthony and Johnsons "I Hope Someone"
Kaiser Chiefs "I Predict a Riot"

Now playing: "Desire" Bob Dylan

"Hombre" -- M.I.A. If this track doesn't make you dance, you might wanna look down and see if you still have a pelvis.

Honourable mentions:

"I Predict a Riot" -- Kaiser Chiefs
"You are my Sister" -- Antony & the Johnsons
"16 Military Wives" -- The Decemberists
"One Life to Leave" -- Out Hud
"You Got a Killer Scene There, Man" -- QOTSA
"Sweet Cloud" -- The Kills
"Land Locked Blues" -- Bright Eyes (thanks M. Leland for reminding me of this one -- Emmylou!!!)

I would name several Arcade Fire songs, but for Canadians like me, that is a 2004 album.

Has anyone heard the new White Stripes single "Blue Orchid" yet? I got it off Itunes...it is fantastic. Jack White stays in this high falsetto voice the whole time, you can barely tell it's him. Very catchy too with the requisite guitar riffs.

i like it a lot, but it's pretty short and no guitar solo!

You mean it's a long lost gem from the Ramones' Rocket to Russia with a young Chris Isaak on vocals?

"Naked Woman, Naked Man
Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

Chris Isaak? Before my time I guess...I would compare it more to Robert Plant after sucking on a helium balloon.

You're telling me Chris Isaak is before your time and Robert Plant ain't? Check Isaak out then. Isaak HAS been in his prime for about 20 years now.

Hmm..I don't look at song titles when I'm looking at albums, but I'll go down my 2005 album list and list some tracks I really like.

Archer Prewitt:
Wilderness
The song with the lyric 'Nothing seems to be so far away from truth and the natural law'

LCD Soundsystem:
Daft Punk is Playing At My House
Losing My Edge

Bright Eyes:
Landlocked Blues

Iron & Wine:
Cut 6 on Woman King

Josh Rouse:
Winter In The Hamptons

Mary Gauthier:
Song with lyric 'Roll on brother in the wheel inside the wheel'
I Drink

Stars:
Ageless Beauty

Patrick Wolf:
The Libertine
Tristan

M.I.A:
Sunshowers
A song that's somewhere from cuts 7-9 that I can't summon any specific lyrics to.

Decemberists:
Infanta
16 Military Wives
Sporting Life

Beck:
Girl

Mahjongg:
Hot Lava

Akron/Family:
One of the ones near the end of the album that's actually coherent

I haven't absorbed AiH enough yet to comment, but probably 1 or 2 songs off that.

I'm finding fewer standout individual tracks this year than I had by the same time last year, but a handful are finally starting to shake out:

"Black" Okkervil River
The only track that has me hitting the repeat button.

"16 Miliary Wives" The Decemberists
The track that finally helped me "get" The Decemberists.

"Goodnight Goodnight"
Of all the retro-80s tracks, the one that clicking with me. Lightweight, but a great hook beaten to death.

"Hey Now Now" The Cloud Room
A relentless earworm. Technically this has bumping around the 'net since last year, but their first full-length is due this year, so I'll stand behind it for the moment.

"Color Confused" JAYMAY
If somebody doesn't produce a full-length from this great singer songwriter, this may be one of the best individual tracks of 2006.

Now Playing: NPR's Weekend Edition

Out Hud - "Mr Bush..."
Fiery Furnaces - "Sullivan's Social Club"
Greg Weeks - "Dusted"

I've been mostly listening to old stuff the last few months, so that's the extent of my list.

EDIT: I almost forgot my favorite Scottish Canadian folk singer.

David Francey - "Ankle Tattoo"

"I'm Going to Stop Pretending That I Didn't Break Your Heart" by eels. There's plenty of others which are catchier and more radio-friendly (I guess since I don't listen anymore), but nothing that tops this for being simple, powerful, haunting and beautiful.
