I don't think it was a joke at all. I think it was an accusation against about everyone on this forum of being dishonest and making out lists so as to look cool. Doesn't anyone think it's possible that most people are actually listing the songs and artists they like most, and not calculating which ones will make them super hipsters?
Does anyone expect that different people's lists will look drastically different? Of course not. It's ridiculous to expect them to. For one, there really are some albums that have such universal appeal that a large number of people enjoy them. Secondly, not everyone has time to research hundreds of albums each year. In that case, your best bet is to check out music critics and other people on the forums recommend. This naturally results in similar lists.
So what's the big deal? Who cares? Are you campaigning for everyone to become fanatical consumers of new and unheard music? Or would you rather people not include obscure artists, since they only do that to be cool? I just listen to and search for new music to help me get through the day, and I imagine everyone else here is about the same.
I'm getting about sick of people coming in and swaggering about how everyone's lists look the same and what superior tastes they must have since they're above liking such commonplace music.

I'm not trying to grandstand because some of my lists ARE different, but SO are some of others. I'm only listen' mine because the list is too short, nobody seems to care, or it's a joke, so let's all get in on it. I hope EVERYBODY has a good time tonight!!

RL is right. P-Bo ripped everyone (if the post was sarcastic, then it's unclear because there's no reference) for listing some tracks everyone likes and then some obscure ones. So, what else are you supposed to list? Crap that everyone has heard and totally hates? You certainly wouldn't get any closer to getting your hipster merit badge if you told everyone you really liked "My Humps," but people would also call you an idiot, or at least think it. I'd guess that everyone hears mostly the same music (last year we probably all heard Spoon, Sufjan, New Pornos, etc. and most of us liked something off those) so it's reasonable for us all to agree that a particular song from such releases is good. But each of us probably also hears and likes something that few others hear, because it's obscure or poorly reviewed. Chances are that what we like is going to be a mix of the more and less popular releases.
Besides, we have to be careful what we list, or someone might tell us we're tasteless losers for liking the wrong song.
I want to make one thing clear, even though I truly believe that it's perfectly clear to anybody who has been here for awhile.
We Love You. We want your opinions. Just because somebody posts an Opposite Opinion before yours means Nothing! Just be honest and post your thoughts! I haggle with myself over this stuff, but you guys have total freedom. AS LONG as you remember that you might Piss Somebody off, I say, "Go for it!!"

I read it as tongue-in-cheek and found it quite funny. Particularly in the context of the random attack on Kyla and the perceived aura of coolness that led to the "Strokes suck...you suck for liking them" gist of it, I read P-Bo's post as primarily a joke, even if there's a grain of truth to it. There's a whole lot of indie cool that gets passed off as superiority in the music community. I'm not saying that's what anyone here does it, and I'm not trying to continue skewering Joji's post, but to tell someone to "go away" because the music they listen to doesn't fit a certain mold smacks of superiority. There's a whole "how the hell can you listen to THAT???" attitude that bubbles under comments like that.

Really, who cares what anybody here likes or dislikes. I'm certainly not going to apologize for my personal tastes. And besides, no one here knows what anyone looks like. That's the best part, no?
I like to think that my opinions have an “if the shoe fits…” quality about them. I don’t like personal attacks and I don’t like people who try to advertise how intelligent they are. The recognition of intelligence, along with trust, must be perceived by others without being force fed. I can tell you that I’m trustworthy but it will only get me as far as my next fabrication. Likewise, I can say I’m smart and it will only get me as far as my next post.
I think there is an elitist characteristic shared by many in the indie-rock community and, although it doesn’t apply to all and could be called a generalization, it does surface enough to be noticed by some. I don’t question what people like and I’m happy for them if they are being honest with themselves. If they aren’t, I consider that to be sad and, due to the fact that I will probably never know their lies, very pointless to discuss further. I just felt it needed to be mentioned, in light of the attack on Kyla.
I will say, due to the fact that a “Guilty Pleasures” thread exists, we aren’t all being honest with ourselves all the time. I looked through the “Favorite Active Bands” thread and I realized two things. One is that some really great music never gets mainstream recognition. (I think indie lovers kinda prefer that though.) The second is that some people spend so much time going against the grain; they fail to realize when going with the grain will provide a more pleasurable experience.
To prove my point and show that I am not totally innocent of these charges, I will list the contents of my burned CD which I labeled “Guilty Pleasures” When friends inquire about its content, I tell them it belongs to my wife. (ouch!!!)
1 – “When Doves Cry” by Prince 2 – “The Call” by The Backstreet Boys 3 – “Cry me a River” by Justin Timberlake (d’oh) 4 - "Barbie Girl" by Aqua 5 - "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera 6 – “Need I Go On?” by P-bo
How’s that for [corporate?] balls?
In closing, I have noticed that this is the second time we have bumped heads on a topic, RavingLunatic. The odd thing is that I feel, based off your posts, that we have very similar tastes in music. I love some of the new music I’ve been exposed to here and I tend to explore the selections by people who seem to have similar interests. For that, I thank you. I also like that fact that, since you obviously don’t feel that my post applied to you, you were willing to champion others who you felt were falsely accused. That is commendable.

Wow. I didn't think my post would create such debate. Thanks for all the support. I mean it is after all a music discussion forum. It would be much better if you don't agree with choices, put forward an argument for or against it.

Yeah did anyone see him on SNL? He was unbelievable, at least on his first song.
This really turned into quite a love-fest huh? I started to tear up.
I like your approach to moderating mark f. For a while anytime I wrote that I didn't like a band I was afraid it would get wiped and I'd be sent to the principal's office.
No hard feelings, P-Bo. I definitely respect you as a thoughtful and intelligent member of these forums, and you do have a point about the indie sub-culture's tendency to elitism (which I don't think is necessarily harmful in the larger scheme of things). Like you said, though, it's kind of pointless to discuss it further, since it's impossible to get inside another's head. Hopefully, you can forgive my occasional petulance over these kinds of things.
Anyhow (I refuse to say anywho), a few great songs from 2005 that I only recently discovered are:
"Laughing" by Winterpills "Camel Lights" and "Summer Snow" by Snow Machine "Jamboree" by Capitol K

I guess this would be a bad time for me to post a link to the photos of LinnTate and me which are here at this site? Yeah, I'd say it is.
