Isn't Mike Shinoda the guy from Linkin Park? I don't remember his mic skills being up to par. Or his taste in music, for that matter.

Yup, he's the rapper for Linkin Park. He's a mediocore MC at best if he's not worse. I'm just hoping he has a bunch of guests on his LP like LP did on Reanimation, i.e., Chali 2na from J5, Evidence from Dilated, Zion-I, Planet Asia, Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch, etc. The promo had Styles of Beyond featured and they are dope.

I'm not really expecting much though...

I would be pleasantly surprised if his solo work was similar to Reanimation, which I thought was relatively decent. I suppose that's not entirely out of the question.

What tends to alienate me in general from most hiphop is all the boasting and how they market by pretending to be these angry violent counter-cultural people when they're really doing it just to rake in the cash. (Take Eminem. He's created a character for himself in his songs that's 100% focus group based. I bet in real life he's a consumate businessman.)

That being said, the hip hop album I'm really getting into this year is Dangerdoom - The Mouse and the Mask.

I also like Edan and Kanye West this year, and I expect the new Outkast to be good too.

I agree that Reanimation was dope but again I think it was their horde of guest spots on the mic that made is really good. Shinoda is still subpar and may not have the strength to support a solo LP.

Without a doutb, Common's "Be" is the best hip-hop album of the year with "Late Registration" just behind. West's album has more songs and is sonically deeper, but Common's albums is a tight, stellar hip-hop album.

I'm a big fan of Roots Manuva - I love the guys voice. Awefully Deep was my favorite hip hop offering of 05. I was disappointed with The Craft, expected better from Blackalicious.

White-friendly hip-hop = Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, newer MF Doom, Atmosphere, etc.

Anyways, I like Blackalicious and thought The Craft was absolutely horrible....

My top 3 of the year:

Ghostface/Trife Da God - Put It On The Line
GZA/Muggs - Grandmasters
Sean Price - Monkey Barz

Yes, because white people hate Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre...oh, wait...idiot white teenagers are the only people who buy that crap. Well, that kills your theory.

White-friendly means being able to relate to the music....

I don't think too many white kids can relate to 50 Cent or Dr. Dre. They only buy the music because it is "cool". If you think "idiot white teenagers" are the only people who buy a 50 Cent record, you're sorely mistaken.

On the other hand, many white kids can relate to Aesop Rock or Atmosphere talking about their relationships or low self-esteem or whatever. Go to an Aesop Rock show and you'd see what I'm talking about.

You don't live in a place where there is an abundance of black and/or hispanic people around, do you?

I do. Everyone plays the same shit and they all identify equally with it.

So everyone (black or white) listens to 50 Cent....fine....

But how many black people actually listen to Sage Francis? I honestly, don't know a single one. If I asked black people out here about Sage Francis, they might look at me as if I had a big green head and bug eyes. You ever been to a Sage concert?

How many black people listen to Sage Francis is irrelevant. You said yourself it's identification. If Sage was marketted the same way Eminem is, he'd be as popular.
I went to a Buck 65/Sage Francis/Boom Bip gig once but I was in Scotland at the time...so not a lot of black people.

Sage can't be marketed the same way Eminem is because his music appeals only to the white underground crowd. Even if he got marketed like Eminem, there is no way he would have even a substantial black fanbase....most black people just can't relate to what he's saying. That's the bottom line....

And that's why his music would be considered "white-friendly"....of course, there's nothing wrong with that. It's just the truth.

Yeah, I'm sure you've done careful studies. Brava, genius, brava. Of course it's all racist, unfounded opinion studies but what the hey. Wu-Tang is asian-friendly, for example. Therefore, black people hate them.
