There were so many great records last year it's ridiculous.

Even though my top thirty looks nothing like yours, have to agree with your sentiment.

Right now, I'd have to say 2005 was the best year so far of the "oughts." and as many have stated many times this year, is not going to be challenged by 2006, even though this last month has been strong.

This is my list if anyone is interested. I don't think it has changed much since then.

Not exactly an original or mind-expanding list, but I figured I'd throw in some of my picks from last year.

1. Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
3. My Morning Jacket - Z
4. The National - Alligator
5. Animal Collective - Feels
6. M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us
7. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - s/t
8. Broken Social Scene - s/t
9. Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
10. A Northern Chorus - Bitter Hands Resign

Yeah, it's a little (lot) late...but what the hell, you know?

Did you guys realize that there were 2 straight-up indie rock masterpieces last year? I think I just realized this in the last 2 days. I am speaking, of course, about Spoon's Gimme Fiction and the National's Alligator.
I don't think I ever fully grasped the brilliance of those two albums until yesterday. "Mr. November" is, I think, my second favorite album-closing song ever (behind "Motion Picture Soundtrack" of course).

I've started to come around on The National. I love the way "Secret Meeting" reduces to just a drum beat as Berninger says, "Didn't anybody tell you? ...This river's full of lost sharks" with this depressing resignation to his relationship's impending doom. Then the keys and guitars kick back in. Awesome.

Yeah, it took me a long while to come around to the National as well. In fact, after listening to it probably 6 or 7 times, I pretty much dismissed it. I'm glad I came back to it.

Holy crap we agreed on something.

I'm not really sure what to do.

Should we hug?

Man hug, though, not one of those effeminate lap-pop hugs.

Pod people have invaded the outskirts of Seattle. They like beer, but they hate paying for crap when all they have to do is absorb and become you and turn you into some future mashed goo. What's so hard to understand? It's just the last gasp of a former human, or the first gasp of a future human. GASP!! Cool

President Bush, please do a better job with Seattle than you did with the former Big Easy. Smiler

I kinda thought that whole bottom part of the post was his signature. I don't know. Definitely strange.

2005 was definitely the best year in recent memory. I thought 2002 was pretty great as well, and my friend thinks that 1999 was just about the best year ever. We've got a theory going that every three years is a great year for music, so I'm looking forward to 2008. Smiler

My old list:

1. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
2. The Decemberists - Picaresque
3. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
4. The Go! Team - Thunder Lightning Strike
5. Broken Social Scene - s/t
6. Wilco - Kicking Television (live)
7. Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
8. Spoon - Gimme Fiction
9. Andrew Bird - ...and the Mysterious Production of Eggs
10. Death Cab for Cutie - Plans

Now I'd put Twin Cinema a little higher - that album has grown on me like mad. Also, Clap Your Hands should have been on there, but was not. I STILL need to check out MMJ's Z, Deerhoof's Runners Four. and also, this is the first time I've heard of this National band, so that's another one to check out.

2005 was really a great year for music.

21. The Chemical Brothers - Push The Button
22. P:ano - Brigadoon
23. Metric - LIve It OUt
24. Prefuse73 - Surrounded By Silence
25. the Books - Lost & Safe

Wow...10 months makes a difference eh?? Not really...Kate Bush is the only album that would slide down the charts. Hardly listened to full album since 2005. Jaga Jazzist and BBS would duel it out for Number 1.
Number 3 would be Sigur Ros, and Architecture #4.
Death Cab For Cutie would climb a little and Sasha would climb to around #12 and every one else just falls in the place they are...

I have to say, My Morning Jacket's Z is an excellent album. If I redid my top ten, it might well make its way on there.

Except for Into the Woods, that song is terrrrible.

Hey, even Abbey Road had Sun King. Great albums can stumble sometimes. The hard part is finding albums without a single bad song. They're out there, but hard to find sometimes.

I take back everything I ever said about 05. I've just gotten The Runners Four this year and have been digesting it for a few months and it is hands down the best album of 2005. I don't have any other Deerhoof and I plan on working back through Reville, Apple O and the others. Anyone have any suggestions?
