I'll be getting some CDs for Christmas, so after that, I'll try to get my list up. The Shakira might contend. There is a chance that I'll buy the new Lindsay Lohan (sounds more consistent than Speak,) but I doubt it would make my top 20. Also, I'll see what The Darkness come up with. Darkness' first single rips off Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer" IMO.

I like Bob's idea. My 11th album is definitely better than my 20th. I do think that the top albums should be weighted more than Fiery's would give it. I think something like 35-30-27-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 would work about right. Then again, maybe we should just go with Fiery's original idea, if only for simplicity's sake.

What about if I don't rank my top 20 in order? For example, Twin Cinema by the New Pornographers and Shadow and Splendor by Stacie Rose are tied for my favorite album of the year, but after that, there's no order.

Wow. I really meant for this to be a list only thread(easier to keep track of) and not really a comment thread, but great feedback!! I'll list some of my thoughts:

1. I like the idea of a 20 point countdown because throughout the year I see lists (mine as well) where we list the top 10 as tight as we can, and then list 10-20, or in some cases 10-50 in no exact order. But, I believe,by this point system, we arrange our lists more constructively and make that 10-20 slot just as important. We could see some tight races, and instead of adding up a bunch of 1's (meaning Cd's 10-20 all get 1 point, that means, by the end of tabbing up the scores a bunch of Cd's might end up with the same point value for Our final list.

That's what I think. I'll be re-listening to my Top 20, just to make cause for each CD and the slot they receive. This is the end of the year and all of our previous lists come down to this.

2. I think, with no major new releases left, that the final lists be tallied in/around Jan 7-10th. Most mags will be done by then.

3. Please list once. Once your name is on the Final List page(page 2 of thread) no alterations.

4. Do you think Metacritic will post a year-end list of the Top 20 by the users here??? I would propose, beginning with 2005, that they could post the USER'S YEAR END LIST on the Music page. Along side the Critic's year's best. We do have the user's comments and ratings for Cd's.....worth a try, if not tried before????!!!

5. 2005 releases only!!! The Go! Team is a tough one. I originally wasn't going to include it, but it does have 2005 stamped on the back cover, and Metacritic has it listed as 2005, so it will be included. I first heard it in Jan (along with Arcade Fire) and knew they were released in 2004....sometimes you miss the boat on some CD's, but it should by 2005 releases you heard in 2005.

That's my thoughts. Maybe I'll contact Metacritic to see if they could look into this, and our List could be a part of the Music home page. If you have your list ready....post away!!

Your final judgement would be the way they are listed, I guess. You mentioned Twin Cinema first, therefore, it seems that would be #1, or you would've listed Shadow and Splendor before it. No ties in Top 20 lists. That is why the separation is by 1 point, sometimes it is hard....but in the end it is another list.

Heck....I know a few of my fav's in my list won't even come close to making the Final Top 20, but I'll still list in the closest order I can.

The lists should come from people who used Metacritic for 2005. I would say more than 50 posts??? Or minimum 2 months(Dec included). I guess that is fair...and I see what you are saying, so something to watch for.

So if they are in no order, you'd assign points based on the way they are listed anyway? Or would everything get an equal value?

I enjoy participating here, but I rarely get the opportunity to, so I would definitely be in favor of the two months rule, as opposed to the 50 posts rule...but, I'll leave it up to those who have dedicated more time and energy to the site.

We'd all probably be posting best-of lists in the Best Records of 2005 thread anyway, so why not tally them?

I'd like to recommend that nobody read anyone else's list until they post their own. That way nobody's tempted to influence the results (Either by thinking one album is getting too much kudos, or thinking one isn't getting enough).

I disagree. If it were possible, we all list on the same day, same hour sort-of-thing, but it aint going to happen. I can't wait to read everyone's list, and wish to list mine first, 'cause nobody's list will influence my order. I don't think I'd put say, Gorillaz at #11 instead of #14, because it is lower/higher on other's lists....trust your list and go from there....again, it is not that serious, but could be a format to go by if Metacritic will post a User's TOP 20 of 2005.

I would like all to number selections 1-20 as in most lists goes. I know some out there don't care to put a numerical value on year-end lists, but to keep this as an essential User's Top 20, yes, I will assign points based on way listed. That's what this thread will be for. If you don't want your list assigned a numerical value, just don't list here.

I think your system is fine, FIF. I'll do my damnedest to get 11-20 in a working order, but I'm not sure I can be as analytic about it as others of you can. I'll try.

For the most part, I'll guess I'm throwing away my vote (or throwing the curve) because I'm sure NONE of my top 10 will be likely contender for the final tallied top 10...I'm not expecting to see Hard-Fi or Orange Peels on many lists!

And, as noted, if you don't want to post a list with points attached to it for eval, just post your list under the OTHER best records of 2005 and you'll be free from the responsibility.

I'll contact the Editors and see about them placing the Forum Regulars list on the Music page...this puts the onus on you, Fiery, to tabulate the scores accurately!!!

No problem there. I'm stats-o-matic. Hopefullly it will become a regular-yearly thing. Minimum 15 users should pull an accurate Top 20 of the ratings of Metacritic Users. More the merrier. Hopefully we'll have a range of picks that will show an interesting representation compared to the other Top20 lists listed here. Let the fun begin...

By the by, although it's fair to say that not MUCH new comes out before the end of 2005, there are at least a few things coming (the third Ryan Adams record on Dec 20, f'rinstance) and so I think the target 'due date' for these lists should be the first or second week in January. Some people, who aren't interested in the stuff coming in December, can post sooner, of course. But it's unfair to penalize those who want to hear the Ryan Adams or Shakira, etc. But I say early January to prevent the "I've still gotta catch up on my 2005 purchases in early 2006" syndrome...

Yes, Jan 10 sounds fine with me. I'll have all my Christmas albums, and I'll decide about the new Lindsay Lohan. I guess, though, if we buy a 2005 album we really like in say mid-2006, the lists can't be changed - right?
