If you like. I kind of felt that it was too self-indulgent to be posted in a space as democratic as the MC forums, and especially this thread. I might just shove it in the other "Best of 2005" music thread, since that one has seen all sorts of weird stuff (multiple flame wars, etc.) happen in it already.

I don't know, as many as predate the Strokes and sound nothing like them?

Modest Mouse and the White Stripes both had stuff out well before Is This It.
It just wasn't popular yet.
So however you feel about those bands, it's wrong to call them 'churned out'. They're playing the music they want to play -- not the music the record company told them would sell.
And don't call Jack White untalented unless you've seen him live.

It's too bad I have already finished my list, because I got two AMAZING CD's for X-mas. Goldmund "Corduroy Road" and D_rradio "U_nderscore". They are both top 20 worthy and Goldmund might have finished in my top 5. "My Neighborhood" is the best song I have heard all year, edging out "Everything Lay Still" by Colleen. Breathtaking really.

Agreed, 'Corduroy Road' is terrific.

Originally posted by MattD: My list is below. Placements might change, but it's a good approximation. And if I regret something not being in the list later, it's still representative.
1. New Pornographers - Twin Cinema 2. Stacie Rose - Shadow And Splendor 4. The Veronicas - Secret Life of.. 5. Hope 7 - self-titled 6. Anna Nalick - Wreck Of The Day 7. Saving Jane - Girl Next Door 8. Brandi Carlile - self-titled 9. White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan 10. The Like - Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking? 11. Teenage Fanclub - Man-Made 12. Cindy Alexander - Angels & Demons 14. Lee Ann Womack - There's More Where That Came From 15. Garbage - Bleed Like Me 16. Josh Ritter - Hello Starling (limited edition) 17. Liz Phair - Somebody's Miracle 18. Amy Rigby - Little Fugitive
Honorable Mentions (not limited to these, but I'm keeping the total at 50: ) 2005 albums from Julie Gribble, Jerra, Imogen Heap, Kate Bush, David Gray, Sigur Ros, Metric, Wallflowers, Fisher, Martha Wainwright, Madonna, Courtney Jaye, Bruce Springsteen, Eisley, Brie Larson, Franz Ferdinand, Tracy Bonham, Sheryl Crow, Mary Gauthier, Miranda Lambert, Go-Betweens, Annie, Little Big Town, Marion Raven, Kathleen Edwards, Aslyn, Brad Paisley, Doves, Trisha Yearwood, Tori Amos..
They're not honorable mentions, but I also enjoyed the Coldplay (couple great songs, like "What If?,") Tristan Prettyman, Alexz Johnson, Hope Partlow (very promising with songs like the driving "Crazy Summer Nights" and the charming "Like You Do" hinting at more,) Shakira, Mae, and more.
There are some albums that I unfortunately couldn't buy before I wanted to finalize my list. They include Mountain Goats, Magic Numbers, Keyshia Cole, John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, Wolf Parade..
I'm sorry but you call that diverse? You actually want to brag on that list? Aside from a couple artists, you don't have any reason to brag. I can think of about four or five other lists, including mine that are more different and diverse.
Yeah, but why mention how different it is at all? And it's not the only post where Matt has gone on about how he listens to both mainstream and indie records and isn't a close-minded snob like the rest of us (at least that's the implication). It's getting old. Whoo, you put a mediocre Garbage album in your top 20. Good for you.
Originally posted by RavingLunatic: I like your list, hobo. In fact, that list might be closer to mine than any I've seen yet, plus a few wild cards I haven't heard are thrown in. Now I think I'm gonna check out that Page France album.
I just got the Page France album, so I'm high on it now. Its charm may start to wear but not yet. I have a thing for folky Christian pop music and Page France delivers.
I haven't heard your number one, Thee More shallows. I'll have to sample it on Emusic.
I'm not trying to brag or anything. I'm just proud of my list. I'm not saying it's better or worse than the other lists. And my list does have various kinds of music, from country to folk to pop/rock to indie to alternative. I can't believe you get up and arms about a :-). On other message boards, it's meant to be lighthearted, and I didn't mean it any differently here.
I think it's nice that my list gives a different perspective. You won't get very many new posters with new views if you treat people this way.

Seriously. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to show off about liking mainstream music. It's like flaunting the fact that you love eating Spam or Big Macs. I mean, if you like that stuff, fine, but why on earth would you be proud of it?

Or, conversely, we will continue to drive away a lot of good, old posters. Thank you, Matt.
Let's keep it on topic, folks.
Edited to clarify -- "Let's keep it on topic, folks" means the topic at hand is your list of the best records of 2005, not the quality of individual members taste in music. We have a lovely chat room just waiting for your visit, so if you want to keep sniping away, take it there because it's done here.
I'll be there handing out popcorn and selling programs.

The rumor is that you only have until Friday to post your list before Fiery tabulates the votes. He hasn't been around for a few days, so I don't think he's counted mine yet, so I can still change my #20 again and throw everything into a big magilla.

yeah...Mark F and hoboghost not tallied yet....Top 20 looks locked. Still haven't seen Linntate's list(been waiting....) and a couple others. Friday seems a good settle time, and leaves me until Monday to post final 50 list.
