This isn't the best of 2005 list from Metacritic but we actually did basically the exact thing on my website. We had decided to do this months ago, but I became extra motivated when I contributed to this list.
Anyhow my web designer left a glitch in the design so sorry about the lines.
What's the deal with people deciding that because an album isn't making top 20 lists other than theirs, no one else could possibly have heard it? There were more than 20 albums released this year. Hell, my full list is currently sitting at a top 275, because that's how many albums I thought were "quite good" or better this year. Nickel Creek et al. are very much on this list, even if they aren't represented in my top 20.

I didn't think nobody else heard Nickel Creek because nobody else had it on their list yet -- I thought so because I hadn't read a single thread where somebody other than me had mentioned the album.
Of course, I don't usually read the live shows thread, in which it turns out it *was* mentioned.

Any chance you'll post that list?

I've been lurking for awhile as I've worked on my top album list. I finally decided to register and here's my top twenty list:
1. My Morning Jacket-Z 2. ...and you will know us by the trail of dead-Worlds Apart 3. Edan-Beauty and the Beat 4. The Earlies-These Were the Earlies 5. Wolf Parade-Apologies to the Queen Mary 6. Iron and Wine-Woman King 7. Broken Social Scene-s/t 8. New Pornographers-Twin Cinema 9. Bloc Party-Silent Alarm 10. The White Stripes-Get Behind Me Satan 11. The Perceptionists-Black Dialogue 12. Sigur Ros-Takk 13. Okkervill River-Black Sheep Boy 14. Benzos-Morning Stanzas 15. Engineers-s/t 16. Kanye West-Late Registration 17. Decembrists-Picaresque 18. Rouge Wave-Descended Like Vultures 19. Coheed and Cambria-Good Apollo.... 20. Antony and the Johnsons-I am a Bird Now
not much change in top 20 over last three calculations. So I can calculate Top 50 next weekend, I may move cut-off date to this Friday(6th)and post final list 8th - 10th. I'd say close to 95% of users lists are in anyway.

Looking at the User's Top 20, it's interesting that I own (or did own) as many of those records as I do/did. Out of the current top 10, I still own 6. I did own the Broken Social Scene and Wolf Parade records (although, to be honest, I didn't buy them, but got them as freebies) but I traded both in. Sleater Kinney and CYHSY are the only records in the top 10 I didn't own this year. I had only 3 of the 10 Pitchfork records, 2 of the 10 best rated by Metacritic, and 2 from Tinymixtapes.
On the other hand, I had 8 from Under the Radar's list, 9 from Q's, 6 from PopMatters, 6 from NME's, 7 from Magnet, and 7 from Filter's.
From my personal top 20, I don't see many of my picks making appearances on any of those lists...a few appearances by Kaiser Chiefs, Magic Numbers, Richard Hawley and the Shout Out Louds. I guess my favorite record that was a critical pick was my #12, Bloc Party.

Is it just me or does anyone else out there think that critics are out of their minds with their best of lists for 2005? I've tried to listen to My Morning Jacket, Clap Your Hands, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A. and the Go! Team and I think its some of the worst music ever committed to a CD. I realize that music is a very personal thing and we all have different tastes, but garbage is garbage. There's a reason why you won't find one person in a hundred that eats feces. Its not a matter of an aquired taste, its just plain unedible. And I tried mulitple times to listen to the artists above but the music is just unlistenable. What kind of crack is someone one when they can hear M.I.A. and say its worthy of making a top 10 list but completely snub "Blinking Lights" by eels. And quite frankly, I'm starting to think that critics, and many listeners for that matter, are becoming mindless zombies. How else can you explain the sudden popularity of all these cookie cutter bands that are only given any credibility because of their punk attitude? I think I was the only person on the planet who thought "Is This It" by the Strokes was the most overrated album ever. And lucky me, its popularity spawned an entire array of no talent wannabes. How many Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinands, Bloc Partys, White Stripes and Modest Mouses can we churn out? Am I the only person in the known universe who would rather eat a slab of beef that's been sitting out in the sun for a month than listen to 5 minutes of any of those bands? And then of course there are the critics who cling to nothing but all these neo folk artists like Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket and Bright Eyes. I must be near deaf because I just don't see what the hype is all about. Between Rolling Stone having a top ten list that contains 50 Cent and The Rolling Stones and all these other lists that are damn near identical with nothing but neo folk and garage rock revival stuff, I weep for the future of music.
And for those wondering, some of my favorite albums of the year are the eels, Mike Doughty (how did this album not make ANYBODYS list), Teenage Fanclub, Jack's Mannequin, Ryan Adams, Luce, Feeder and Bob Mould.

Ok so, what your basically saying grumpyoldman is...most of the people that post in the metacritics music forums like garbage.
Wow. You must be so much better than the rest of us for not listening to the unlistenable garbage that we do.
Thank you for gracing these forums...it's truly an honor. And I hope you keep posting your brilliant and enlightening(and not the least bit narrow-minded and assinine) perpective.

I weep for the future of music if it turns out to be Luce, Feeder, and Mike Doughty.

I like your list, hobo. In fact, that list might be closer to mine than any I've seen yet, plus a few wild cards I haven't heard are thrown in. Now I think I'm gonna check out that Page France album.

This is the beauty of compiling people's 'best of' lists. It gives an opportunity to discover new music you may have missed. I know I have found a lot of good stuff from this thread alone.
