I had Eels at #18 on my list, but for me it suffered from being too long. If it were a single disc, it may have been better IMO. I liked the Magic Numbers disc, but it just missed my list.

The only one that's really shocking, for me anyway, is the Eels. That album had a lot of postitive buzz, and it's one of those albums that seems almost universally accessible. It just missed my top twenty, and the only thing that kept me from ranking it higher is the length. I think it suffers from the same problem as all double albums-- no matter how strong the songs are, it would've been even more impressive if edited down into a single disc.

Yes. Eels. It took me some time to listen to it all the way through. It made my list, but I rarely played it for the overall mood. Depressing at times, yet uplifting too.
I'm listening to Edan a bit more, and although it was shy of my Top 25, It coulda went as high as 20 for me....it too, is a surprise. It is around the 64 point-mark.

I've been avoiding posting in this topic until I was ready to put up my final list, but I will do that eventually. Unless something outta left field knocks me on my ass, eels will be my number one. It has been far and away my number one for a long time. Everybody around here (my friends and family) thinks it's number one too. I've played the whole thing straight through at least 50 times. So what? BRMC is my number two.

27. Eels 29. Caribou 36. Super Furry Animals 43. Gorillaz
Fine albums, but not quite in that upper echelon for me.
I've got 6-20 all worked out now. So..if I posted my list now, it'd only be inaccurate a maximum of one or two points, but, since this is supposed to be my -final- list, I'll hold off.
Hey, are you separately counting the number of #1 rankings for each album? That'd be interesting to see.
Magic Numbers and Isolee didn't make my filter, and I didn't like Death Cab For Cutie aside from a good first listen.

Four of those I never listened to (DCFC, SFA, Gorillaz, and Magic Numbers). I like some of the songs from the Eels, but there are just too many songs that get on my nerves for it to make my top 20 (sorry, mark f). Fiery Furnaces' EP is awesome though, they just get no love 'round these parts. Caribou was great as well, and I'm a little more surprised that it hasn't shown u pon more lists.

Eels have been rising for me as I listen to them more. The thing is, I'll hear one song and think, "This is brilliant!!" and then not really notice the next four songs. And this happens about seven times before it ends. But when good, it's very very good.
SFA's got a raw deal man. No love from the critics, now from us too. I really thought that that was a good, consistent album (though not great) that would have a broad appeal and show up a lot in the 10-20 range.
As for Isolee, I thought that album was sweet, but IDM is not really my thing so it was a just-miss. If only there were more Germans amongst us....
I bet Fiery Furnaces would have done better, but they left a bitter taste in our collective mouth, and EP was a long time ago.
01. Erin McKeown - We Will Become Like Birds 02. Kraftwerk - Minimum-Maximum 03. My Morning Jacket - Z 04. The National - Alligator 05. Sufjan Stevens - Come On, Feel the Illinoise! 06. ...I did that on-the-spot. That was pretty hard.
I'd recommend you guys check out some of my entries that you may not know much about (01, 02, 07, 09, 10 and 20) instead of releases from Wolf Parade, Clap Your Hands, Broken Social Scene, Animal Collective, Architecture in Helsinki or Bloc Party/Franz Ferdinand (same band?).

Since I agree with you a lot and like your list, I will look into a couple of those. Hopefully, I'll find something that'll even shake up my final list.

Fair enough. They're still interchangeable to me, though.

Good, that makes me happy. Be sure to pay close attention to Erin McKeown. She recorded that album last year in New Orleans. I think the music carries a fair amount of that New Orleans spirit, too.
So for obvious reasons, "We Will Become Like Birds" holds a certain amount of poigancy. I think so, anyway.

I like the ethnomusicologist. I heard a story on her on NPR or something back when "We Will Become Like Birds" was released sometime during summer. She didn't make my top 20, but it's a good listen.

Even cooler: She's totally self-deprecating and unpretentious about her degree. On that NPR piece you probably heard (was it World Cafe?) she dismissed her ethnomusicology major as a "waste of time."
