While it's a little early to start any Top 10 lists, I thought people could post on 2005 releases that they've picked up and enjoyed.

I can't recommend more highly the new one by Archer Prewitt, Wilderness. I would be shocked if a record this pretty wasn't in my Top 10 of 2005, but I won't predict anything yet.

It's a lovely, lush, quiet record of songs about love and loss. It's the kind of gentle, folky power pop that lovers of A.C. Newman, Rogue Wave, The Shins, and Elliott Smith should enjoy.

And the new Low is great, and gets better each listen!!!

based on the first three songs I've managed to download off that Archer Prewitt album, I would agree. sounds really good.

I cant wait to hear the madvillainy remix album.Sounds exciting.Have to do some digging to see if there is some leaked stuff out there.I am sure there is.

The Archer Prewitt Album (Wilderness) is great I have to agree. One great song follows another and it hits hard with "cheap rhyme". One of my favorite of the year thus far.

It seems a tad early, doesn't it? It make sense to at least wait until mid-year for a "Best Records of 2005 (So Far)" thread.

Also, what is "power pop", and why do at least half of your posts in the Music forums contain some mention of it?

Back on topic, even though it hasn't been released yet, and there are no details about it at this point other than being scheduled for release in 2005, I'd put down money on the new (well, forthcoming) Flaming Lips album.

As I said in my initial post, this isn't about making a comprehensive list, but merely to point out records that have come out in 2005 that others would recommend. These records could certainly fit in other threads ("I Recommend" for example) but I thought keeping a running list of recommendations would be cool. If nothing else, it'll serve (for me) as a diary...I'll be able to remember, in December, what grooved me in January!!!

As for power pop, the thread mark pointed out steers you in the right direction. As for WHY I mention it...it's one of the genres of music that I really love, and it's a central reference point for most of the music that I love.

Well...i was bouncing around out and about yesterday...and i was tuned into kexp when i heard a nice little ditty that stuck in my head all day long.Surprisingly it was the new single from

Mercury Rev entitled 'In a Funny Way'

This is a catchy frickin tune here.I keep humming it a day later.I went and downloaded the track from itunes.

I have heard of these guys...but never really payed attention.I am sure someone on here could shed some 'light' for me and let me know if they are worth checking out...or how their past records sound compared to this single.

Very curious what any of ya'll think.I have done some research but it didnt do anything for me.

So if anyone could help me out with these guys it would be greatly appreciated?

The new Mercury Rev is good, but I'd really recommend that you check out Deserter's Songs to really get a sense of the breadth of their talent, Imprezu.

There've been two records so far this year that have really captured my imagination, both of which have been flawed but IMO fantastic: the new Low and the new M83. I would highly recommend each of them. The new Archer Prewitt is nice, too, as is LCD Soundsystem.

From my latest batch of new arrivals, I've been very impressed by my first listen to the new Graham Coxon (technically a 2004 release in the UK) and Ed Harcourt records. The Harcourt is really catchy and ups the tempo from the maudlin (but gorgeous) balladry of his last two records. The Coxon record is the best Blur-related record since The Great Escape and shares the sound of Parklife/Great Escape-era Blur with a little indie edge.

And I Am Kloot's self titled second record is really catchy Britpop as sung by a Robyn Hitchcock sound-alike. I think all three will remain in my changer for a while...

Doves' new album 'Some Cities' is really great I think. Also diggin' LCD Soundsystem and the new album by Bloc Party, all worth taking a look out if you haven't heard them.

Here's a third endorsement of Graham Coxon. I've been returning to only a small handfull of albums so far this year (Marianne Faithful, Antony & The Johnsons), but Happiness in Magazines has really caught my ears, especially the aforementioned "Bittersweet Bundle of Misery."

Now Playing: "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" LCD Soundsystem streaming on WOXY <-- I spun this one this morning as well...they're not really my cuppa, but I was really taken with what a wide variety of styles the album covers...I'll have to give it another spin, I think.

A great record once again.

To my already growing list of 2005 faves (Archer Prewitt, Ed Harcourt, Graham Coxon) I have to add the new one from Ben Lee, Awake is the New Sleep. It's a solid mix of uptempo pop and moody balladrythat ruminates on love lost and life to be lived. "Get Gotten," "No Right Angles," and "The Debt Collectors" are on a short list for my fave songs of 2005, and "Catch My Disease" and "Close I've Come" aren't far behind.

I expect the new Clem Snide and Josh Rouse records (both out soon) to be very good, too.

It's late February 2005, and I've already found several people at Amazon who have posted fairly large lists of the Best Records of 2005. I don't think I could list more than 5, but some have 20 or 25. Many of them are not yet released, so I assume people have garnered them from downloads or advances.

If you don't fear jumping the gun, feel free to post your ongoing lists here.

Here's what I can offer so far:

1. Archer Prewitt: Wilderness
2. Ben Lee: Awake is the New Sleep
3. Graham Coxon: Happiness in Magazines
4. Ed Harcourt: Strangers
5. Low: The Great Destroyer

Bright Eyes need more consideration, but they don't break the top 5. Maybe when there's a few more records to get towards 10 they can slide in.

Too ealry for a list yet...but i can for certain say that somewher in my list 11 months from now will be Roots Manuva's new album awfully deep.Very very good album one of the best hip hop albums of the year for sure.
