I went to the second Bonnaroo and it was just a hippie fest. The Flaming Lips were probably the only band there that gets respect in the indie world (as opposed to the jam band world), although Neil Young, James Brown, the Dead, the Wailers, and Robert Randolph were all there.
Anyway, this year's lineup as reported by the 'Fork: Bonnaroo Lineup
Not bad at all, and very different from their typical style. Thoughts? I might try to go myself.
I think all the hippies that will go will be in for somewhat of a dissapointment. Sure, Mike Gordon's lame band will be there with Bela Fleck and a bunch of other favorites but without Phish or Widespread its not the same. Although, even with Radiohead and a bunch of other bands I like, I would stay far way from that place. There will still be thousands of granola, unshowered, smelly, tripping trust fund hippies twirling around and chicken dancing.

Well, we all hate hippies, but one thing I will say about them is this. An event like Bonnaroo should be a clusterfuck (Woodstock '99), but since it's 98% hippies everyone just gets along. The year I went there were no fights or arguments that I witnessed. You just parked your car somewhere, pitched a tent next to it, and then chilled in a field and listened to some crunchy grooves. There are much worse people than hippies, and they always have plenty of supplies. Just because they like crappy music and don't understand their own political views doesn't mean they're bad people to be around. I guess this year we'll see what it's like when 80,000 hipsters are in the same place at the same time.
Either way, the lineup is unbelievable. And if it's a bunch of hippies that don't give a crap about CYHSY or Bright Eyes or Dungen, then I guess I'll just be front row at those sets (if I go). Fine by me.
whats so f-ing "crappy" about jam bands The Grateful Dead, Phish, Iron Butterfly exc. They all rock as for politcal views do you not get that all they want is peace or is that to complicated for you to understand "dubs"
When some asked why chuck norris always round-house kicks ppl in the face he anwsered with a round-house kick to the face

Oh, man, I think the best one of those Chuck Norris things goes something like this: When Chuck Norris goes to donate blood, he declines a syringe, and instead uses a handgun and a bucket.

When I went in 2003, drug busts were, umm, not really much of a problem. I saw one, where some people had set up nitrous tanks on the main road from the campsites to the stages and were selling balloons. But the people walking around shouting "Nugs for sale!" didn't seem to have any trouble, nor did the people with signs offering drugs in exchange for rides home, nor did anyone smoking bowls next to security guards.
I wouldn't expect to have dogs going through your car on the way in.
Ok, I'm going to Bonnaroo for the first time this year! I have been wanting to go for a few years now, but this year I am finally doing it! I'm going all out! Loading up the Jeep Grand Cherokee and heading out on Wednesday(June 14th) and stopping one night and my old stopping grounds SIU-Carbondale! then leaving the next day to go straight to Bonnaroo! My only Problem, I'm going Solo! , I know, I know. but no one wants to go with me. But I don't care. This might be my last chance! So I need Advice. Help me make this the greatest Experience! Tips, Hints, Must-Do's!

You seem to be quite an avid planner. Relax, you have four months to find a tent, a camp stove, and drugs. I'm going with some guys who will probably try to bring a keg in, but I think it's silly to plan like that. My advice is to listen to as much Radiohead, Dungen, and Beck as you can without getting burned out. Other than that, it's pretty simple: sit in a field and listen to music for 16 hours a day. They have vendors to handle the food and pot concessions. Oh and bring some moist towelettes.
haha! yes, the planner I am. the excitement was more sarcastic than anything. but I can't wait to go. love most of the bands playing and for those i have never heard of, i am beginning to enjoy what i have found out. Moist Towlettes? Pot Concessions? Tell me more. i know i will be in a different state of mind, that is for sure. but what i dont know is where i will shit! or how i will wash myself(could you tell im not a hippie)or what i should bring because you guys now know you wish you brought it/them when you went. just some honest advice. a-ight playas?

I'm going to Bonnaroo. I'm going to invest in $1.25 water bottles and sodas while I still have the chance. (The price on the grounds will be $3 minimum, maybe $4).
There's nothing wrong with jam bands. They're just not for me.
Now, when Eric Cartman shows up with a big drill machine...I don't know what I'll do.
