Ok, so last Friday, Hammersmith Apollo, the true King and his Knights decide to grace us with their presence. To me who has been a fan since Birthday Party and Butcher Shop days it is nothing less than a pilgrimage, and trust me, you feel humbled and privileged to be in the same room as them.
So, does it matter what songs they played? Not in the slightest-the new stuff stands up really well interpersed with classics like Tupello, red right hand, let love in, Deanna, the list goes on and on, and that is exacty the best part, and why we keep going to see him again and again. The sheer volume of quality songs means that they could play for hours and hours and still be full of surpises. It means that in the two and a bit hours allowed they have the musical ammo to literally blow you away and leave you on your knees at the raw unadulterated genius you have been honured to witness. I cannot impress strongly enough the sheer power of this band live. The range of songs is astonishing, and they fit everything in to suit their diverse fan base. Also I must add that the new album absolutely comes into it's own when heard live, the songs and music are really powerful, and NIcks performance is brilliant and funny.
If you haven't seen them live, get to see them while you still can. If you have, trust me when I say that they have lost none of that power from the early days, and if anything, with the depth of their catalogue now they are guaranteed to exceed any expecations. All I can say is, wherever you are, if you have a chance, get down to see them and be prepared to be blown away.
