Story was recycled from Ring II/Hide & Seek. Editing and continuity was horrible. Characters and plot points were randomly inserted with only the sequel in mind. Too long for too little too late.

The Ring2 and Hide and seek were created after this if I am not wrong. Or at least Hide and seek was. Ring 2 was created by the same guy, so I would expect to see some similarities in there. There is no sequel, so I don't understand what characters you are talking about.

Try watching the original Japanese version of Dark Water; the American remakes lose SO much of the flavor and atmosphere with their emphasis on familiar actors and over-the-top cgi fx that there's little or nothing left of the original to enjoy.

I enjoyed watching this film and found it much better than the original Japanese version. There was one character plot in the original that maybe needed more explaining in the US version but that's a real minor detail. I didn't care much for the the ending in the original. "Dark Water" came off as a good psychological thriller though for those expecting a scary movie, I can see where they'd be majorly disappointed.

Yeah, this is up there with the worst of 2005. Most horror/thriller movies I at least want to shut my eyes once or twice, but this had nothing. Someone has yet to tell me what is so scary about a dark puddle of water.

I can say that the Japanese version is a lot better compared to the American version. Even the other american remake horror movies are not that good and scary though they are very alike.

Haven't seen the original, but I really liked this movie. The entire approach of lighting, creepy, eerie feeling throughout the movie was some of the best emotional terror I've felt from a movie in a long time. This movie wasn't horror at all, it was a psychological thriller with supernatural overtones that was perfectly suited for the genre. It wasn't so much scary as depressing and off-balance. I felt the oddity and eerie atmosphere. The director captured the true essence of creepiness in this movie.

You're right about it not being scary tab, and I think that was my problem with it. It looked good, the acting was good (especially from John C. Reilly and Tim Roth), but typically when I see a "horror" film, I like to be a little scared. I found Dark Water to be just boring most of the time.

I've seen "Dark Water" on dvd a couple more times and it's close to being my favorite 2005 film. Top notch acting from Reilly & Roth, as already mentioned, but especially from Jennifer Connelly. This is the first remake of a Japanese supernatural movie that I prefer over the original. I think advertising the film as horror- expected scares & screams- was a great disservice. This was an excellent psychological thriller/ possible ghost story. Myself, I saw the movie being more about what was going on in the troubled mind of Connelly's character than with a possible ghost in her apartment building.

Your response was very appropriate and appreciated. I understand what you mean.

As for boring, personally, I was struggling with the mysterious-thriller angle and feeling the ominous dripping dread hanging over the entire movie that I couldn't be bored. I absorbed the creepiness of the place because I've felt it before in real life. It was unnerving for me.
