I personally believe that GTA 3 is the best of the series, balancing gameplay, story and environment better than the others. Also, I chose this because not only did it have the biggest influence than the rest, it didn't over do it with annoying details (such as in San Andreas), which keep me busier with choosing what to wear and my haircut, rather than continuing on with the missions. Also, it had the perfect blend of short and lengthier missions: Complete all of the quick ones first, then accomplish a bigger and more indepth mission. The games after GTA 3 usually had missions which took more than 7-8 minutes to complete ( anything above 10 min. counts as a long mission). This is why I chose GTA 3. Feel free to debate.
I have Vice City and I have played GTA3, and I'd have to say that I like Vice City better. By the way, why is San Andreas so much better than Vice City? Bikes and weights?

The first second that I came to the realization that San Andreas was best, was that first car I stole, when instead of just throwing out the driver, I opened the door, punched the driver in the mouth, and then threw him out. For me, once I played San Andreas, the previous titles all seemed to have inexplicable choppiness that didn't exist before. Go rent San Andreas, you will know why...

I've only played 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. I'm currently working on Liberty City stories.
Vice city is the best because... you own property the cops are tougher to avoid when you have a wanted level and I like a challenge the cops are easy to see so you won't accidently run over them...or so you can run over them on purpose! you get a tank if you find enough hidden packages and can do a mass rampage around town that's wicked cool you get a bad ass helicopter if you find all 100 hidden packages that you can do a mass rampage around town with
and that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

San Andreas, for me, panders to the lifestyle of the main characters and misses the opportunity to lampoon it. It is ripe for parody. Especially the boyz n the hood fantasies of young men. The game is too sincere.
I'd love a GTA: Tokyo game. Large, dense city with an often wacky popular culture but also Japan has been a fiercely independent country with a strong national identity, proud of its ancient culture. The series is popular in Japan. Potentially great game.
I think GTA3 was definitely the one that revolutionized gaming and really took it up a notch. But that doesn't make it the best. I think Vice City was the best in the series. GTA San Andreas made some cool upgrades but I think as far as missions go and story GTA vice City was my favorite. Hopefully GTA4 changes that even though it''s not coming until Q2 2008

Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.
In my personal opinion I would have to say GTA 3 is the best of the series. This continuation of the series does an excellent job in balancing gameplay, storylines, and the graphics are not that bad. Moreover, it it gives u a wide variety of options and choice of missions, whereas other games would make you keep at it with one mission until you passed in order to continue. The game also keeps gameplay at an enjoyment v.s being upset at how long a mission may take in order to pass due to its short 5-10min mission lenghts. This is a rather enjoyable feature where some players may find a mission unappealing, so they would want to finish it asap, rather than continuing on with the missions.
