Sorry, that was a bad joke. I'd like to take MTV, their audience, and the bands they play (with a few exceptions) out back and shoot them.

I also understand that by saying "with a few exceptions" some may note that by knowing whats on MTV, that must mean I watch it. Okay, I have quickly skimmed channels before. So, as long as you aren't completely absorbed into the conformative MTV programming and videos, you are fine.

I agree with you Nickel, there are only four or five decent artists who get airtime on "Music Television." I don't even know how it can hold that name with half of the pointless things they create.

I would like to make mention of "Gwen Stefani"(sp?) specifically on this topic though. I don't understand the appeal of thoughtless lyrics coupled with annoying and repetitive beats and bad 'singing.'

that shit's bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s (incase you weren't aware). That line right there is destined for "take out back and shoot history"

Interpol and the Strokes.

I just can't listen to these bands. They are annoying, they write bad songs, and they are cliche in all the worst ways.

Anyone who would use cars and/or driving as a metaphor for sex...that covers pretty much every pop group/star in history.

Back to the original list on this thread (yeah, i know it's old): Britney Spears and Kelis have two of the best songs of the past couple years, with "Toxic" and "Milkshake", respectively. and Christina Aguilera is going to put out an amazing record one day. i promise.

No, she isn't and no, they didn't. Their producers and songwriting teams do all those things. All they have to do is jiggle in a video and dance in synch on screen.

Ashlee Simpson. That's it.
She's the one who has nothing to contribute. Britney can dance (and I'd agrue she should be a dancer, not a singer, and yes I am offended by her popularity), Christina can sing, Jessica... is pretty worthless, too.
Regardless...
Everything about Ashlee is out of place. She's a celebrity by association, she neither writes nor performs "her" music... let's dwell on that for a moment. In her SNL performance, she gets caught lip-synching, then at the end of the show blames her band. "Sorry, my band played the wrong song," she says.
No talent.
No character.
Big star.
I don't know what's worse, her doing it or her career not being ruined by it.
At this rate of artistic decline and the acceptance (and encouragement) of it, I expect Paris Hilton's record in 2006.

I'm not defending her, but I think she does write her own lyrics.

Nope. She "co-wrote" all her stuff. This means she maybe came up with a line or an idea ("Can you write me a song about love?") and then generously recieved a credit from her songwriting team. Avril Lavigne "co-wrote" all her shit too. Can you tell them apart?

Pop music is not always my thing, and I tend to blame pop for that more than I blame myself, but I am a little offput by this topic. I mean most of the people who post here don't really listen to Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, or Limp Bisquick- so why do we care? I mean if we had a "take out back and shoot" list in Alternative or Indy Rock, it might make a little more sense to me. The way I figure there will always be lousy pop music out there. Junior High dances have to play something, right? Getting mad at the vapid pop stars that unknown comedians will be making fun of five years from now on VH1's I Love The '00s doesn't make you cool. It just means that you, like most of America, does not care for what's on the radio these days. It's not like if the current crop of bad pop stars suddenly went away the top 40 stations would suddenly start playing Cat Powers, Bright Eyes and Xiu Xiu. There would just be another wave of crappy pop stars to take their place. No one is worth shooting because "they are just pawns in the game" so to speak.
That said, given the opportunity I'd probably take a swing at Rod Stewart.

But you listed The Faces as one of your top five rock bands? I guess I might get it, I prefer The Faces to most of his solo stuff, especially when he sings the American songbook.

Man- I did list the Faces as one of my favorite rock bands of all time, and I love them as much as any band I love. But after Rod Stewart refused to sing "ooh la la" talked smack about the album, which prompted Ronnie Lane, the heart and soul of the Faces, to leave the band- then wait until Laney dies from MS, only to cover "Ooh La La" and give yourself writer's credit for it. That is just plain evil. So I only like my Rod from pre-74. Also those songbook records are what I hate when I say I hate pop.

Aren't they synonymous? All pop stars should be taken out back and sterilized.
